Mama Shelter

Mama Shelter was founded in Paris in 2008 by Serge Trigano and his sons Jérémie and Benjamin, with Philippe Starck shaping the design of the first house. The concept rejected both conventional luxury and anonymous budget hospitality: affordable rooms could coexist with serious restaurants, large communal tables, music, humour, design and neighbourhood social life. Mama became one of the most influential European examples of the hotel as an urban social platform.

The Brand

Mama Shelter describes itself through the idea of a generous 'Mama' who feeds, entertains and looks after guests. The emotional proposition is warmer and more familial than most lifestyle brands. Rooms matter, but restaurants, rooftops, bars, DJs, games and public spaces are equally central.

2008 - Paris East

The first Mama Shelter opened in Paris's 20th arrondissement, away from the traditional luxury geography of the Right Bank. Choosing an unfashionable eastern neighbourhood was part of the concept: value and cultural energy could be created outside established hotel districts.

The Trigano Family

Serge Trigano brought an unusually deep hospitality lineage. His father Gilbert Trigano was one of the defining figures behind Club Med. Mama Shelter therefore belongs to a multigenerational French hospitality story, even though its product is radically different from the holiday-village model.

Jérémie And Benjamin

The sons were not decorative participants. Mama was conceived as a family enterprise combining Serge's hospitality experience with a younger generation's relationship to music, design, digital culture and urban life.

Philippe Starck

Starck designed the first Mama Shelter and helped establish its irreverent visual language: chalkboard ceilings, masks, playful objects, strong graphics and a refusal to make affordable rooms feel generic.

Affordable Design

Mama's early strategic innovation was to separate design quality from conventional luxury pricing. Guests could trade room size and formal service for personality, food and social atmosphere.

Rooms Are Not The Whole Hotel

The concept assumes that a guest spends meaningful time outside the bedroom. Restaurants, terraces, rooftops and lounges therefore receive disproportionate creative attention.

Food First

Mama Shelter treats food as a primary hospitality product. Large restaurants, generous portions, brunch, communal dining and local use create demand independent of overnight guests.

The Big Table

Communal tables reinforce the family metaphor and reduce the distance between restaurant, lobby and social club. Shared space is part of the brand's emotional architecture.

Rooftops

Rooftops became a recurring Mama code, especially in warmer cities. They create local relevance, sunset / nightlife demand and a reason for residents to enter the hotel.

Music

DJs and music programming are structural rather than decorative. Mama wants public spaces to change character through the day and into the night.

Humour

Humour appears in language, objects, graphics and room details. It prevents the design from becoming self-important and makes the brand recognisable even when individual hotels differ.

The Masks

Character masks and playful room objects became one of the original visual signatures. Their importance is symbolic: Mama gives guests permission to behave less formally than in a conventional hotel.

Family Language

The name 'Mama' is a service promise. The brand should feel protective and generous without requiring traditional luxury ceremony.

Service

Service is informal and direct. Staff are expected to create energy and ease rather than reproduce grand-hotel hierarchy.

Local People

A Mama restaurant that is used only by hotel guests has failed part of the concept. Local residents provide social credibility and make the property part of its neighbourhood.

Neighbourhoods

Mama frequently chooses districts outside the most obvious luxury core. This can reduce real-estate cost while allowing the hotel to participate in emerging urban culture.

Marseille

Mama Marseille helped prove that the concept could leave Paris while remaining recognisably French, social and neighbourhood-oriented.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux demonstrated the ability to place Mama inside a historic city while maintaining irreverent contemporary energy.

Lyon

Lyon strengthened the domestic French network and reinforced food as a particularly important brand asset in a major gastronomic city.

Los Angeles

Mama Shelter Los Angeles was an important early international test, placing the French concept in Hollywood and demonstrating its ability to travel beyond Europe.

Prague

Prague expanded the Central European network and showed how Mama could adapt to a city with strong tourism demand without becoming a conventional tourist hotel.

Belgrade

Belgrade aligned naturally with the brand's nightlife, food and social-energy proposition.

London Shoreditch

London Shoreditch places Mama in a neighbourhood already associated with design, nightlife and creative industries — a market where authenticity is difficult because lifestyle hospitality is highly competitive.

Lisbon

Mama Lisbon combines rooftop culture, colour, food and Mediterranean / Atlantic urban life, fitting the brand's social model particularly well.

Rome

Mama Roma uses a large property format with pool, rooftop, restaurants and playful design, showing that the concept can scale beyond small boutique hotels.

Dubai

Mama Shelter Dubai marks a significant Middle Eastern expansion, translating the affordable-social concept into a market known for high-spec luxury and large hospitality projects.

Nice

Mama Shelter Nice extends the brand into the Côte d'Azur while deliberately avoiding the classical Riviera-palace vocabulary.

Zurich

The brand's 2026 expansion includes Zurich, testing Mama's accessible, irreverent hospitality in a high-cost, high-income city.

Accor - 2014

Accor acquired a 35% stake in Mama Shelter in 2014. The deal provided distribution and development power while the Trigano family retained creative involvement.

Why Accor Wanted Mama

Mama offered something large hotel groups were struggling to create internally: a credible founder-built lifestyle culture with restaurants, design, local social life and a younger audience.

Ennismore

Mama Shelter later became part of Ennismore, the lifestyle platform formed through Accor's joint venture. It now sits alongside The Hoxton, 25hours, Mondrian, Delano, SLS and other culture- and F&B-led brands.

Why Ennismore Fits

Ennismore's emphasis on restaurants, bars, neighbourhoods and founder-built brands matches Mama's operating logic. The risk is that multiple lifestyle brands inside one platform begin to converge.

Current Scale

Current official Mama / Ennismore positioning describes a network of more than twenty hotels internationally. LHL uses the rounded official formulation because openings and announced hotels are changing quickly across Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.

Development

Mama's format is attractive to developers because it can activate neighbourhoods with substantial F&B and public-space revenue while operating below conventional luxury pricing.

Architecture

There is no fixed architectural prototype. Existing buildings, towers and new developments can all work if public spaces are large enough to support the social programme.

Design After Starck

Starck established the original visual language, but Mama cannot remain dependent on one designer forever. Later properties need to preserve irreverence and generosity without copying 2008 Paris.

Accessible Lifestyle

Mama occupies a valuable position below luxury lifestyle. It offers design, restaurants and cultural relevance without requiring luxury room rates or formal service.

Who it is Not For

Mama is not for travellers who want silence, large rooms, discreet palace service or a private retreat. Restaurants can be busy, music can be loud and public spaces intentionally social.

Mama vs 25hours

Both are founder-built European lifestyle brands inside Ennismore. 25hours is more design-narrative and individually authored; Mama is more familial, food-led and deliberately accessible.

Mama vs The Hoxton

The Hoxton is more restrained, residential and work / neighbourhood oriented. Mama is louder, more colourful and more explicitly restaurant-and-entertainment driven.

Mama vs Moxy

Moxy is a highly scalable select-service lifestyle brand with compact rooms and bar-led check-in. Mama is more full-service in F&B and more dependent on large restaurants and local social use.

Mama vs Hotel Indigo

Hotel Indigo builds individuality through neighbourhood storytelling inside IHG. Mama has a stronger recurring personality — humour, family language, food, music and social generosity.

Mama vs Citizenm

citizenM standardises compact-room technology and efficient public spaces. Mama is less standardised, more restaurant-heavy and more culturally messy by design.

The Risk of Noise

Social energy can become exhausting. A hotel must protect sleep and private guest experience while operating busy restaurants, rooftops and nightlife.

The Risk of Formula

Chalkboards, bright graphics, DJs and communal tables can become predictable. The brand must preserve emotional generosity rather than merely repeat visual codes.

The Risk of Corporate Scale

The original Mama was a family-authored alternative to chains. Global growth through Accor / Ennismore must not erase the founder-built personality that made the brand valuable.

What Distinguishes Mama Shelter

FOUNDED IN PARIS IN 2008 BY SERGE, JÉRÉMIE AND BENJAMIN TRIGANO, WITH PHILIPPE STARCK AS THE ORIGINAL DESIGN AUTHOR. A FOUNDER-BUILT URBAN LIFESTYLE BRAND BASED ON GENEROSITY, FOOD, LARGE SOCIAL SPACES, MUSIC, HUMOUR, ROOFTOPS AND NEIGHBOURHOOD LIFE. MAMA PROVED THAT DESIGN-LED HOSPITALITY COULD BE CULTURALLY RELEVANT WITHOUT BEING LUXURY.

The Strategic Achievement

Mama Shelter helped make the hotel restaurant, rooftop and public space commercially central to an accessible lifestyle hotel. The bedroom could become simpler because the rest of the building became richer.

The Hospitality Lesson

Guests do not remember only what a room looked like. They remember where they ate, who they met, the music, the table, the rooftop and whether the hotel felt alive.
