1 · POSITION
The company behind The Peninsula predates its best-known hotel. Its origins lie in the Hongkong Hotel Company, founded in 1866; a merger with the Shanghai Hotels company brought the present corporate name in 1923. The Peninsula Hong Kong opened in 1928. These are three stages of one developing business, not alternative foundation dates. [1, 2]
2 · A HOTEL BECOMES THE SIGNATURE
The Peninsula name gives the group a recognisable public identity, but the parent company supplies the longer institutional history. The distinction matters for hotel writing: a brand’s first opening tells one story, while the company that owns and develops it may carry earlier buildings, investments and operating experience. Here that earlier history stretches back well before the Peninsula flagship. [1, 2]
3 · BEYOND THE GUESTROOM
The group’s 2024 results describe interests including The Repulse Bay, The Peak Tower and the Peak Tram alongside hotels. Residential accommodation, commercial space and a transport attraction place the business within the everyday and visitor geography of Hong Kong. Its hospitality history therefore includes places people inhabit or visit without checking into a Peninsula room. [3]
4 · EXPANSION HAS SEVERAL DATES
The same results distinguish the 2023 soft openings of The Peninsula London and The Peninsula Istanbul from their first fully operational year in 2024. That vocabulary is useful. A hotel does not necessarily move from construction to settled operation on one ceremonial date; opening stages affect which rooms, restaurants and services are available to guests. [3]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
Long corporate continuity does not establish an uncontested claim to being the world’s oldest hotel company. Comparisons depend on whether one measures incorporation, surviving ownership or uninterrupted hotel operation. Nor should a portfolio be read as a list of wholly owned properties. The defensible account keeps the company, its brands and the interests in individual assets distinguishable. [1–3]
