2010 - Creation
The French government created the Distinction Palace in 2010 to identify exceptional properties among hotels already classified five-star and to strengthen France's international positioning at the highest end of hospitality.
Beyond Five Stars
Palace is not a sixth hotel star. Eligibility begins with the official five-star classification; Palace is a separate distinction recognising an exceptional combination of place, history, architecture, service, gastronomy and identity.
Why France Needed It
France's 2009 hotel-classification reform introduced the fifth star, but policymakers concluded that a small group of exceptional hotels required additional recognition beyond the five-star category.
State Framework
The distinction is officially recognised and regulated by the French state. Atout France administers the process and the minister responsible for tourism makes the award on the commission's conforming recommendation.
Three-Year Term
Following the 2024 reform, Palace status is awarded for three years. This is important for LHL: Palace status is time-sensitive and must never be treated as a permanent historical attribute.
Two-Phase Procedure
The process has two principal phases: objective eligibility review by Atout France, followed by qualitative assessment by the Palace commission.
Eligibility - Operating History
A new hotel must generally have operated for at least 24 months; a fully renovated hotel that underwent a long closure must generally have operated for at least 12 months after reopening.
Eligibility - Five Stars
Only hotels officially classified five-star may apply.
Eligibility - Room Size
Candidate hotels must generally provide guestrooms of at least 26 square metres including bathroom, with limited tolerance for a small percentage below that threshold.
Eligibility - Reinforced Five-Star Criteria
Candidates must satisfy the reinforced five-star criteria, with only very limited tolerance. These include features such as fitness, spa, valet service and a meaningful suite component.
Twelve Appreciation Criteria
After eligibility, the commission considers 12 appreciation criteria as a combined body of evidence rather than a simple points checklist.
Economic Excellence
Commercial performance and staffing intensity are part of the assessment. Atout France cites staffing indicators of at least 2.5 employees per key for Paris candidates and 1.8 outside Paris, adjusted to occupancy.
Exceptional Location
The setting should be exceptional, potentially including monumental perspectives, protected landscapes, heritage sites or other environments of unusual quality.
Exceptional Architecture
Historic or contemporary architecture can qualify, but it must be remarkable; heritage protection, architectural authorship and integration into artistic movements can all matter.
Suites and Personalisation
Capacity and a substantial suite component are assessed partly because they indicate the ability to provide highly personalised service.
Aesthetics and Generosity
Interior architecture, designers, noble materials, art, furniture, floral design, bedding and maintenance standards contribute to the judgment of exceptional physical quality.
Legend and History
The hotel's mythology matters: historic events, famous guests and cultural significance can help establish the property's exceptional personality.
Service
The commission assesses personalisation, speed, precision and permanence of service, including 24-hour concierge, valet/baggage, room service and in-room dining capabilities.
Gastronomy and Bar
Internationally recognised gastronomy, wine and bar culture form part of the distinction's hospitality criteria.
Uniqueness
Even when belonging to a commercial chain, the hotel must demonstrate individual character. This criterion is crucial: corporate affiliation does not substitute for singularity.
Environment
The modern procedure also considers environmental policy, showing that the definition of exceptional French hospitality is evolving beyond traditional luxury codes.
Visits
Two commission members visit an eligible candidate to assess the qualitative criteria.
Audition
Each eligible candidate is heard by the commission and can present its case for up to 30 minutes.
Award
On the commission's conforming opinion, the minister responsible for tourism awards the distinction.
2026 Collection
On 2 June 2026 Atout France unveiled a collection of 33 officially distinguished Palaces in France.
2026 Renewal Cycle
Twenty-seven hotels had their Palace status renewed and six hotels entered the circle for the first time in the 2026 collection.
Paris
Paris contains 13 of the 33 current Palaces, making the capital the largest single concentration.
Alpine France
The Alps contain seven current Palaces across Courchevel, Megève and Évian-les-Bains.
Côte d'Azur and South-East
Nine current Palaces are located across Provence, Cannes, Antibes, Saint-Tropez, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Vence and Ramatuelle.
Beyond the Traditional Palace Geographies
The 2026 roster also includes two South-West properties, Royal Champagne in the East and Cheval Blanc St-Barth in the Caribbean.
Not Only Historic Grande Dames
The list deliberately includes both historic institutions and contemporary luxury hotels. Palace status is therefore not synonymous with age.
Not Only Independent Hotels
Palaces may belong to major international groups. Four Seasons, Rosewood, Dorchester Collection, Mandarin Oriental, Raffles, Shangri-La, Peninsula, Hyatt and other operators appear in the current roster.
Property, Not Brand
The distinction belongs to the individual hotel, not automatically to its parent brand. One Four Seasons or Cheval Blanc Palace does not make every hotel of that brand a Palace.
Palace as a House-Level Attribute
In LHL, Palace should therefore be stored as a dated House-level official distinction, not as a brand classification.

Versus Michelin Keys
Michelin Keys evaluate hotels through Michelin's private editorial system. Palace is awarded through a government-defined procedure.
Versus LHW / Relais & Châteaux
LHW and Relais & Châteaux are membership collections. Palace is not joined as an association; an eligible five-star hotel applies for an official distinction and is judged through a formal state process.
Why the Word Palace Is Dangerous
Outside France, 'palace' may be used descriptively or as part of a hotel name. In LHL, only hotels on the official Atout France list should receive the formal Distinction Palace attribute.
The 2024 Reform
The 2024 reform strengthened exceptionalism by shortening the award period to three years, increasing minimum operating history and tightening reinforced five-star compliance.
A Living Classification
Because status expires and must be renewed, the Palace hub should be treated as a monitored dataset rather than a static historical article.

Hospitality Lesson
True upper-luxury differentiation cannot be reduced to facilities. The French system explicitly evaluates mythology, architecture, staffing, service continuity, gastronomy and uniqueness together.

France faced a naming problem: five stars already represented the official top category, yet a small number of hotels operated in another league. Instead of creating a sixth star, the state created a separate word — Palace.
