Hoshino Resorts

Hoshino Resorts began as a Karuizawa onsen ryokan in 1914 and became, under fourth-generation leader Yoshiharu Hoshino, Japan's most influential hospitality company: a multi-brand operator running more than seventy properties from the luxury HOSHINOYA collection through KAI's onsen ryokans, RISONARE's family resorts, OMO's city hotels and BEB's casual houses, plus singular lodgings like Aomori's festival resort. The company modernised the ryokan industry's operations while exporting Japanese hospitality formats internationally.

The brand

Hoshino Resorts is an operator-brand architect: it takes over, builds and runs properties under a disciplined brand ladder, each tier with codified concepts — HOSHINOYA's themed immersion at the summit, KAI's regional onsen craft, RISONARE's activity resorts, OMO's neighbourhood city hotels ranked by service depth, BEB's youthful ease. The system runs on famously data-driven, multi-skilled operations that revived struggling ryokans nationwide.

International outposts — Bali and Guguan under HOSHINOYA, OMO's expansion — extend the ladder abroad. The company remains family-led from Karuizawa, with Yoshiharu Hoshino among Japan's most cited business innovators for flattening hotel operations into multitasking teams.

Brand philosophy

Hoshino's philosophy is the ryokan industrialised without losing its soul: traditional Japanese hospitality preserved as concept while operations are re-engineered — staff multitasking, data pricing, brand codification — to make omotenashi economically sustainable at scale.

Regional revival is the second thread: KAI and the unique lodgings exist to keep Japan's onsen towns and festival cultures alive, making the company a national infrastructure of hospitality heritage as much as a hotel group.

What distinguishes it

The brand ladder. HOSHINOYA to BEB — a codified tier system covering Japanese hospitality from summit to hostel-adjacent.

Ryokan revival engine. Hoshino's operating model rescued and modernised struggling onsen houses across Japan.

Multitasking operations. Flattened, multi-skilled teams are the company's famous productivity innovation.

A century from Karuizawa. Four generations of one family connect the 1914 ryokan to the national group.

Formats exported. HOSHINOYA abroad and OMO's growth carry Japanese hospitality concepts internationally.

WHO IT IS NOT FOR

Hoshino Resorts is a weak fit for travellers seeking Western-luxury service codes, uniform international polish or ultra-tier staffing at every property — the ladder's tiers differ by design, and most of the portfolio is Japanese-language-first. Guests wanting guaranteed summit luxury should book the HOSHINOYA tier specifically; Hoshino serves those who want Japan's own hospitality system, at whichever rung fits the journey.
