Every entry in the Library carries a country, a region and a place. 1611 of 1611 codes are mapped; the remainder are people, whose geography is a question of birth rather than of premises and is answered separately.
The distribution is not neutral and the register should not pretend otherwise. Europe holds 864 entries against 308 in the Americas and 291 in Asia, and within Europe the concentration is sharper still: Paris carries most of the French figure, Milan and Turin most of the Italian. The Library is a European object with an American appendix. That is a fact about luxury hospitality as it has been recorded, and about who did the recording.
