Miraval Resorts & Spas is one of the defining American destination-wellness brands. Its central proposition is not medical treatment, fasting or a single therapeutic doctrine, but the pursuit of a “life in balance” through mindfulness, experiential learning, movement, nutrition, spa, nature and personal reflection. The brand began in the Sonoran Desert in 1995 and developed a broad programme architecture in which guests assemble an individual journey from workshops, classes, outdoor challenges, equine experiences, culinary activities, private sessions and treatments. Since Hyatt acquired Miraval Group in 2017, the brand has expanded from its Arizona flagship to Austin, the Berkshires and, in June 2026, Miraval The Red Sea on Shura Island in Saudi Arabia - its first resort outside the United States.
History
Miraval opened outside Tucson, Arizona in 1995. The name combines the Spanish words “mira” and “valle”, interpreted by the brand as “view of the valley”. Bill and Beth O’Donnell launched the original Miraval Life in Balance with the proposition that everyone could achieve a life in balance. The early years established several elements that became part of Miraval’s identity. Wyatt Webb created the Equine Experience in 1996. An Ayurveda programme followed in 1999; trauma specialist Brent Baum brought Holographic Memory Resolution in 2000; and Andrew Weil, M.D., launched and directed an Integrative Wellness Program in 2004. In January 2017 Hyatt acquired Miraval Group from an affiliate of KSL Capital Partners. Miraval Austin opened in 2019 and Miraval Berkshires in 2020. In 2023 Miraval Life in Balance Spa Aviara opened at Park Hyatt Aviara in California. On June 9, 2026 Miraval The Red Sea opened on Shura Island in Saudi Arabia. The adults-only resort, with 180 rooms and suites including 20 villas, marked Miraval’s first resort outside the United States.
Brand Philosophy
Miraval’s enduring phrase is “Life in Balance”. The brand’s mission is built around mindfulness and the relationship between body, mind and spirit, but it deliberately avoids prescribing a single universal path. The guest is encouraged to explore, experiment and choose experiences that fit an individual objective. A Miraval stay can include yoga, meditation, breathwork, fitness, hiking, challenge courses, equine work, creative expression, culinary education, farm experiences, lectures, private consultations and spa treatments. The programme is therefore less a fixed cure than a framework for self-directed discovery. Digital mindfulness is another visible brand code. Miraval resorts limit device use to designated areas and encourage guests to disengage from habitual digital distraction.
Architecture & Sense of Place
Miraval does not impose a single architectural template on every resort. The commonality lies in the wellness programme and philosophy, while each property responds to its landscape and regional identity. Miraval Arizona occupies approximately 400 acres of Sonoran Desert beneath the Santa Catalina Mountains. Miraval Austin sits within more than 220 acres in the Texas Hill Country and the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Miraval Berkshires occupies a 380-acre New England estate whose historic Wyndhurst Mansion adds a Gilded Age layer to the campus. Miraval The Red Sea translates the model to Shura Island, where desert, mangroves, beaches and sea form the environmental framework. The physical identity is therefore landscape-led rather than stylistically uniform.
Wellness & Service Philosophy
Miraval describes its wellness approach as experiential, immersive and transformative. Guests choose among rotating activities, workshops and private sessions rather than being assigned a universal programme. Signature fields include integrative wellbeing, yoga and meditation, fitness, outdoor adventure, equine and animal experiences, culinary and nutrition programming, creative expression, spirit and soul work, and Life in Balance Spa treatments. Some experiences travel across the portfolio; others are specific to place. The inclusive resort structure supports this model. Accommodation, meals and a substantial programme of activities are integrated into the stay, while selected private sessions, treatments and specialist experiences may be charged separately. The programme is not an accessory to the resort product; it is the resort product.
Brand Characteristics
Life in Balance - a long-standing philosophy rather than a short-term wellness campaign. Experiential wellness - learning by doing is central to the product. Choice rather than a single cure - guests construct individual journeys from a broad menu of experiences. Mindfulness as an operating principle - including Miraval Mode and deliberate limits on digital-device use. Equine programming - a signature element dating to 1996. Inclusive destination model - meals and many daily activities are embedded into the stay. Sense of place - Arizona desert, Texas Hill Country, New England seasonality and the Red Sea each shape the local expression. Hyatt platform - Miraval operates as a distinct wellness brand while benefiting from Hyatt distribution and World of Hyatt.

Competitive Position
Chiva-Som is more structured around destination-health programmes and specialist consultations, while Miraval places greater emphasis on a broad menu of experiential activities and self-directed exploration. Kamalaya shares Miraval’s holistic, non-clinical orientation but is more strongly rooted in retreat culture and Asian healing traditions. Canyon Ranch is perhaps the closest historic American comparison; Miraval differentiates itself through mindfulness, experiential learning, equine work and a particularly strong “Life in Balance” identity. Six Senses operates wellness inside a much broader global luxury-resort system. Miraval is narrower and more specialised: wellness is not one pillar of the brand but the reason the brand exists. VIVAMAYR and Buchinger Wilhelmi are substantially more medical and protocol-led.

Loyalty Programme
Brand + parent programmes. Miraval Authentic Circle is the brand’s own recognition programme for repeat guests. Under the current rules, membership is automatically extended after a guest reaches 10 nights across Miraval Resorts within a calendar year and is then honoured for the remainder of that year and the following year. Benefits include additional resort credit, an arrival gift, retail discounts and selected stay benefits. Miraval is also part of World of Hyatt. Guests can earn and redeem World of Hyatt points at Miraval resorts under applicable programme rules. One programme recognises specifically Miraval behaviour; the other connects the brand to Hyatt’s global loyalty ecosystem.
What This Model Does Not Solve
Miraval is not a medical clinic and does not replace physician-led diagnostics, hospital-grade treatment, therapeutic fasting or disease-specific medical intervention. Its strengths lie in behaviour, mindfulness, movement, reflection, learning and restorative hospitality. Nor is Miraval a passive spa holiday. The breadth of the model assumes a guest who is willing to participate. A traveller seeking only accommodation, dining and occasional treatments can use parts of the resort, but would miss much of the value encoded in its activity schedule and specialist programming.
Conclusion
Miraval helped establish a distinctly American form of destination wellness: less clinical than European medical retreats, less doctrinal than a single-method cure, and more experiential than the conventional resort spa. Its durable contribution is the conversion of mindfulness into a hospitality operating system. The guest does not simply receive treatments; the guest is invited to participate, learn, test boundaries, disconnect from devices and assemble a personal route toward a “Life in Balance”. Hyatt’s 2017 acquisition changed the scale of that idea. Austin and the Berkshires proved that Miraval could travel beyond Arizona; the 2026 opening of Miraval The Red Sea demonstrates that the model is now international.
