Château Ksara

1 · POSITION

Château Ksara was founded by Jesuits in 1857 near Zahlé in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. Its place in hospitality rests on the way a working winery receives visitors: production history, underground cellars and tasting become parts of the same encounter. The bottle is connected to a landscape and an institution that can be entered and explored. [1, 2]

2 · A MODERN FOUNDATION

The Jesuit foundation belongs to the nineteenth-century development of Lebanon's wine industry, not to the beginning of winemaking in the region. An advertorial published by L'Orient-Le Jour describes imported vines and the growth of the enterprise before its transfer to private investors in 1973. Religious origins and later commercial management are successive chapters of the same estate. [1]

3 · BELOW GROUND

The cellars are central to Ksara's public identity. Historical accounts date the discovery of the underground passages to 1898 and describe them as Roman. Their subsequent use for wine storage joins the visitor route to the practical requirements of maturation. The caves are therefore more than a picturesque backdrop, although their ancient attribution needs to remain distinct from the modern winery's documented foundation. [1, 3]

4 · RECEIVING THE VISITOR

The estate's published tour passes vineyards, the observatory and monastery before entering the old winery and caves. Tastings are arranged in different selections, allowing guests to compare styles rather than encounter a single flagship bottle. A brasserie extends the visit into a meal. Together these make the site a place of interpretation, tasting and table service. [2]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ Claims that Ksara is Lebanon's oldest winery concern a modern commercial institution, not the country's first production of wine. The Roman dating of the caves is reported here as an attribution in the checked accounts, without independent archaeological verification.
