Copacabana Palace Casino

GROUP XII · HISTORIC CASINOS

Status⚑ Historic record · September 2026

1 · Position

The casino opened in 1923 within the Copacabana Palace — LHL-H-183 Belmond Copacabana Palace — and closed when gambling was prohibited nationally. The space survives inside the hotel in other uses.

2 · Why it is in the Library

The group exists to record what a casino did for the houses attached to it, and this is the clearest case of the reverse: a hotel that outlived the room which paid for it. What the Copacabana Palace became after the tables went is the more interesting half of its history.

3 · ⚑ Candour

The opening year, 1923, was carried in the Library’s own build and I wrote that it was unknown without checking; the correction is recorded here. The date and terms of the Brazilian ban, and what became of the room, remain unestablished.
