An artist and restaurateur of Franco-Russian descent. Gilbert Bécaud’s Nathalie, released May 1964, described a Café Pushkin in Moscow where the singer would rather be drinking hot chocolate; the song was a great success in France and visitors went looking for the café. There was none. Dellos built it on Tverskoy Boulevard, and on 4 June 1999 Bécaud came and sang the song at the opening of the place it had invented. He was after the atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Russia rather than a restaurant — a literary myth made habitable.
2 · CANDOUR
⚑ The historic city estate of I. N. Rimsky-Korsakov on the site was demolished to raise the new building; the baroque house that looks eighteenth-century is a 1999 construction. Nothing here establishes what his group holds today, or the rest of his career.
