Opening

Santo Collection is a compact Santorini luxury collection built around a single destination and a highly contemporary proposition: purposeful, sustainable hospitality in Oia. It is the latest venture of Metaxa Hospitality Group, whose hospitality history dates to 1975, while Santo’s own operations on Santorini date from 2016. The current architecture comprises Santo Pure Oia Suites & Villas, Santo Mine Oia Suites and The Villas by Santo Collection. Rather than pursuing geographic scale, the collection seeks depth through sustainability, wellness, gastronomy, Cycladic design and personal transformation.

Metaxa Hospitality Group — The Parent Heritage

Santo Collection sits within Metaxa Hospitality Group, a Greek hospitality company operating since 1975. The parent history gives the young Santo identity a half-century institutional background while allowing it to present itself as a newer, more design- and sustainability-focused expression. For LHL, 1975 is parent-company heritage; 2016 marks the beginning of Santo’s Santorini operations.

2016 — The Santorini Beginning

Santo Collection’s awards and sustainability material dates its beginning of operations in Santorini to 2016. Sustainability principles have grounded operations since that year. This distinction is useful because the current Santo Collection identity is newer than the Metaxa group but has already accumulated a decade of destination-specific operating experience.

One Island, One Micro-Destination

The entire collection is concentrated in and around Oia. This is extreme geographic focus: rather than covering the Cyclades or Greece, Santo builds expertise around one of the world’s most recognizable luxury destinations. Oia’s light, volcanic geology, caldera mythology, sea, sunsets, agriculture and architectural vocabulary become the real operating context.

Travel Deeply, Live Profoundly

The current master line is Travel Deeply, Live Profoundly. Santo positions travel as more than accommodation or sightseeing: the stay should create reflection, reconnection and personal meaning. The language is intentionally transformative, linking luxury with self-discovery rather than status display.

Eco-Chic Elegance

Santo describes its world as eco-chic elegance. The phrase captures the desired balance: contemporary design and premium service without disconnecting the guest from environmental responsibility or Santorini’s local identity. Sustainability is meant to feel integrated into luxury rather than imposed as sacrifice.

Three Expressions, Three Guest Missions

The current portfolio is intentionally differentiated. Santo Pure is for travellers seeking authentic connection and self-discovery; Santo Mine for serenity seekers drawn to balance and slow living; The Villas for privacy, togetherness and bespoke residential luxury. The collection therefore segments by emotional guest mission rather than by conventional star tier.

Santo Pure — The Foundational Resort Expression

Santo Pure Oia Suites & Villas is an elegant cluster of luxury suites and villas on the outskirts of Oia. Its identity is Pure Cycladic Elegance, with a stronger sense of resort life and togetherness than Santo Mine. Accommodation is framed as a personal encounter with the Santorini sun and landscape.

Santo Pure — Authentic Living

Santo Pure’s current language centers on authentic living, balance and reconnection with nature. Gastronomy, wellness and experiences are designed to support this journey rather than operate as unrelated hotel departments. The property is the collection’s broadest hospitality expression.

Santo Mine — The All-Suites Counterpoint

Santo Mine Oia Suites is a luxurious all-suites haven inspired by nature. Its positioning is more intimate, emotionally charged and slow-living-oriented than Santo Pure. The property is designed for serenity seekers and wandering spirits, using genuine Cycladic energy as part of its identity.

Santo Mine — Contemporary Cycladic Design

Santo Mine interprets Santorini through contemporary architecture rather than historical imitation. The objective is a sophisticated haven fused with the island’s geology, light and Cycladic vocabulary. Sustainability is embedded in the building concept, externally validated through LEED certification.

The Villas by Santo Collection

The Villas provide the most private and residential expression. Standalone design villas combine panoramic Aegean views, Cycladic essence, bespoke services and space for families or groups to reconnect. Guests also gain selected access to Santo Pure, including complimentary breakfast according to the current property information.

Privacy and Togetherness

The Villas are built around a useful luxury paradox: privacy and togetherness. Instead of a couple-centric Santorini product, they create space for families and groups seeking a private-home rhythm with hotel-level support. This broadens the collection beyond the classic honeymoon market.

Architecture as an Interpretation of Santorini

Across the collection, architecture is intended to respond to Santorini rather than merely reproduce postcard cave-house clichés. White volumes, natural textures, sunlight, sea views and volcanic context are used within a contemporary luxury language. The strongest design principle is connection with the island’s natural elements.

Wellness and Self-Discovery

Wellness is central to Santo’s brand vocabulary. The collection repeatedly frames the stay as a path toward balance, peace and deeper connection with oneself and nature. Treatments and rituals are therefore presented as part of a transformative journey rather than a conventional spa menu.

Gastronomy as Purposeful Experience

Gastronomy is one of the pillars of the Santo universe. Farm-to-table sourcing, local products, seasonal cultivation and Greek hospitality connect restaurants with the sustainability system. The aim is not simply fine dining but a food experience whose ingredients and supply chain reinforce the destination.

Farm-to-Table

Santo explicitly links its hotels with local and in-house food production. Organic herbs, nuts, fruits and vegetables are cultivated in resort gardens and integrated into restaurants and bars. In 2025, the gardens produced 566 kilograms according to the collection’s sustainability reporting.

Organic Regenerative Agriculture

The collection has moved beyond generic local sourcing into organic regenerative agriculture. Approximately 8.4 stremma of resort land is managed under organic farming and ORA principles, using native varieties, organic fertilizers, reduced soil disturbance, crop rotation, composting and water-conscious landscape management.

The Lassithi Connection

Santo’s regenerative programme extends beyond Santorini through Metaxa Hospitality Group’s long family connection with the Lassithi Plateau. Working with the agricultural cooperative and Local Food Experts, the group trains farmers in organic regenerative practices and connects resulting produce to resort gastronomy. This turns procurement into a broader agricultural-development project.

Sustainability Since 2016

Santo states that its operations have been grounded in sustainable-development principles since 2016. Sustainability is integrated into ESG strategy and monitored through the Group Sustainability Committee and resort management. This governance layer makes the programme more systematic than a collection of isolated eco-initiatives.

ISO 14001 and LEED

The environmental approach is externally validated through ISO 14001 certification, while Santo Mine holds LEED certification for sustainable design and construction. These standards are significant because they cover both management systems and the physical building environment.

Water, Energy and Waste

Santo’s environmental programme addresses responsible water use, energy efficiency, waste reduction, plastic replacement, refillable bathroom containers, glass or paper bottles, recycling and reduced paper use. The stated direction is toward net zero waste to landfill, though this should be read as an operational ambition rather than a completed end state.

Sustainable Supplies

Metaxa Hospitality Group developed the Sustainable Supplies programme as a pioneering Greek hospitality initiative. Supplier partners are trained and assessed through ESG criteria, education and field work. Santo’s procurement policy prioritizes local and national suppliers while attempting to reduce environmental impact and strengthen the local economy.

Community and Employees

The social dimension includes equal participation, training, voluntary benefits, sustainability education and support for local communities. Santo explicitly identifies employees as essential to authentic Greek hospitality. Sustainability therefore extends beyond carbon and waste into employment, education and supply-chain relationships.

Authentic Greek Hospitality

Despite the contemporary branding, Santo repeatedly anchors itself in authentic Greek hospitality. The collection seeks to combine personalization and premium service with local culture rather than produce an internationally anonymous luxury experience. This is important in Santorini, where overtourism can easily separate luxury hospitality from island life.

Slow Living

Slow living is particularly important at Santo Mine but influences the wider collection. The guest is encouraged to pause, reconnect and experience the destination with heightened attention. This positions Santo against high-speed itinerary tourism and the short-stay, photograph-driven consumption often associated with Santorini.

Purposeful Experiences

Experiences are organized around gastronomy, wellness, outdoor exploration and on-property rituals. The objective is not maximum activity count but a curated journey connected to the island and personal wellbeing. The brand’s language consistently emphasizes meaning over spectacle.

Sustainability as Luxury Architecture

Santo’s most distinctive strategic choice is to make sustainability part of luxury architecture rather than a separate CSR narrative. LEED design, regenerative farming, local procurement and waste management are presented alongside spa, suites, villas and gastronomy. The intended message is that responsible choices can enhance rather than diminish luxury.

Awards and External Recognition

The collection has accumulated awards and certifications across sustainability, villas, resort hospitality and wellness. Current recognition includes Europe’s Leading Boutique Resort 2025, Greece’s Leading Island Villas 2025, LEED recognition and 2026 wellness distinctions displayed by the brand. Awards should remain supporting evidence rather than substitute for product analysis.

Direct Booking and Commercial Model

The official site promotes direct-booking offers such as complimentary private arrival transfers for qualifying stays, stay-longer savings and villa promotions. Santo also provides GDS codes and travel-expert access, indicating a deliberate combination of direct distribution and luxury-trade channels.

Loyalty and Recognition

No formal proprietary Santo Collection points or elite-status programme is currently central to the public proposition. Recognition is driven through personalization, direct-booking benefits, repeat relationships and travel-trade distribution. For LHL, the current Loyalty classification is None.

Luxury Positioning

Santo Collection sits in contemporary boutique luxury rather than grand-hotel or ultra-luxury territory. Santo Pure provides a broader resort experience; Santo Mine is a more intimate all-suites design and slow-living proposition; The Villas offer private residential luxury. LHL classification: Santorini-focused Sustainable Boutique Luxury Collection with strong wellness, gastronomy and regenerative-hospitality DNA.

What Distinguishes Santo Collection

SANTORINI ONLY. Extreme destination focus creates deep Oia identity.

METAXA HERITAGE. A young collection rests on hospitality roots dating to 1975.

SUSTAINABILITY SINCE 2016. ESG is embedded in governance and operations.

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE. The sustainability model extends into soil, farming and suppliers.

SANTO MINE LEED. Sustainable construction receives external validation.

THREE GUEST MISSIONS. Pure, Mine and Villas are emotionally differentiated.

WELLNESS + SELF-DISCOVERY. Luxury is framed as transformation rather than display.

GREEK HOSPITALITY. Local culture remains central to the contemporary design language.

What the Model Does Not Solve

Extreme concentration in Oia creates destination and seasonality risk. The collection also operates in one of Europe’s most pressured overtourism environments, making sustainability claims especially demanding in practice. A second challenge is differentiation: Santorini contains many design-led suite and villa hotels using similar language around authenticity, wellness and sunsets. Santo must prove distinction through operations, agriculture, service and measurable sustainability rather than aesthetics alone.
