Equinox Hotels opened its first property at Hudson Yards in New York in 2019, taking a luxury fitness-club brand into full-service hospitality. The 212-room hotel was not conceived as a hotel with an unusually good gym; it was designed around how a high-performing guest moves, eats, works, recovers and sleeps across a full day. Seven years later the New York house remains the only clearly operating hotel in the portfolio, while Equinox is preparing a much larger international development programme.
The Brand
Equinox Hotels is the hospitality extension of Equinox, the premium fitness company founded in 1991 and acquired by Related Companies in 2006. Related's ownership mattered because it joined a powerful fitness brand with real-estate development capability. Hudson Yards became the proof of concept: Equinox Club, spa, hotel, residences, dining and the wider mixed-use district were designed to reinforce one another. The development proposition is now explicitly global. Equinox Hotels' current development page says the brand has 15 active pipeline projects and targets roughly 30 hotels over ten years, while a separate forward-looking statement refers to 33 properties globally. LHL treats those figures as development ambition, not operating portfolio. The live operating count remains one until additional hotels formally open.
Philosophy
The founding idea is 'high-performance living'. Equinox argues that luxury travel should not interrupt the routines of people who care intensely about training, recovery, sleep and nutrition. Instead of treating wellness as a spa appointment added to an otherwise conventional hotel, the brand attempts to engineer the entire stay around performance. This is not abstinence-based wellness. The brand repeatedly pairs discipline with pleasure: hard training with cocktails, recovery with social life, healthy food with indulgence. That tension separates Equinox from medical wellness clinics and destination detox retreats.
What Distinguishes it
Sleep as infrastructure Guestrooms are engineered around the 'Dark. Quiet. Cool.' principle. Blackout, acoustic isolation, temperature control, proprietary beds, circadian thinking and sleep-focused rituals make rest a core product rather than a soft marketing promise. A real Equinox Club Hotel guests receive access to the 60,000-square-foot Hudson Yards Equinox Club for the duration of their stay. The club is not a hotel fitness room: it carries the training, classes, personal coaching and facilities of the parent brand. Recovery technology Cryotherapy, infrared sauna, contrast therapies and other technology-led recovery treatments sit beside conventional spa services. The hotel therefore connects fitness and spa through regeneration rather than keeping them in separate departments. Healthy and hedonistic Food is deliberately not framed as restrictive wellness cuisine. Electric Lemon and in-room dining are designed around the idea that performance nutrition and pleasure can coexist. Digital control Mobile tools and in-room tablets integrate lighting, temperature, privacy, dining, fitness bookings and wellness rituals. Technology is used to reduce friction and tune the physical environment around the guest.
Who it is Not For
Equinox Hotels is wrong for travellers who want wellness to mean retreat from performance, schedules and self-optimisation. The brand is also a poor fit for guests who dislike fitness culture or prefer old-world hotel ritual, historic architecture and leisurely excess without a health framework. Its strongest codes are intentional, contemporary and highly performance-oriented.
Signature Houses
Equinox Hotel New York · Hudson Yards
The first and still defining operating house: 212 rooms, including 48 suites, a 60,000-square-foot Equinox Club and Spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and Electric Lemon. It is the complete proof of concept.
Equinox Resort AMAALA · Saudi Arabia · opening / pipeline
The first resort and first international hotel chapter. Red Sea Global describes 128 sleep-optimised rooms, suites and two penthouses plus 21 branded residences. The live Equinox site is already built out, but the brand still publicly frames the resort as a 2026 opening; LHL does not count it as operating until opening is explicitly confirmed. Equinox Anguilla · pipeline Anguilla appears in Equinox Hotels' current contact architecture and represents the brand's Caribbean resort ambitions. It remains pipeline for LHL purposes. Global gateway pipeline Equinox's development platform is pursuing gateway cities and resorts rather than a single geography. Earlier announced cities have changed over time, so LHL records the active-pipeline total rather than preserving every historic proposed opening as if it were current.
Competitive Landscape
LHL-241Miraval Resorts & Spas · Miraval Miraval is immersive destination wellness built around programmes, mindfulness and retreat. Equinox is urban/performance luxury: guests are encouraged to maintain and intensify a high-functioning lifestyle rather than step away from it. LHL-252Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas · Six Senses Six Senses combines wellness with sustainability, place and resort culture across a mature global portfolio. Equinox is younger, more metropolitan in origin and much more tightly connected to fitness performance and recovery technology. LHL-210 · Chenot Palace Chenot is medicalised and programme-led, with diagnostics and structured health protocols. Equinox is a luxury hotel first: science supports sleep and recovery, but the guest is not entering a clinic. LHL-211 · SHA Wellness Clinic SHA is a destination health clinic with medical and longevity orientation. Equinox is designed for travellers who want to keep working, dining, training and socialising while optimising performance. LHL-218 vs conventional luxury lifestyle Brands such as EDITION or Thompson use design, restaurants and cultural relevance as their lifestyle engine. Equinox uses the body - sleep, movement, nutrition and regeneration - as the organising system. Booking With LVXVRY
Equinox Hotels has no confirmed universal LVXVRY preferred-partner programme. LVXVRY can reserve Equinox Hotels on request and quote the best suitable available or contracted rate for the requested dates. No amenity claims are made unless confirmed for the individual hotel and booking. Equinox Club membership is not a hotel loyalty programme. Active Equinox members can access direct member hotel offers, including published member rates and selected privileges, but those benefits are tied to Equinox membership and booking conditions rather than points-and-status hotel loyalty.
Editorial Note
Operating portfolio reviewed August 2026: Equinox Hotel New York is the one clearly confirmed operating hotel; Related confirms 212 rooms and 2019 completion. Equinox Resort AMAALA is presented on the live brand site and has published contacts and room inventory, but Equinox's own current communications still describe it as opening in 2026, so LHL keeps it in pipeline pending an explicit opening confirmation. Development figures come from Equinox Hotels' official development page.
