1 · Opening
Space ran on Platja d'en Bossa from 1986, and from 1989 under Pepe Roselló, until its lease expired in October 2016. Its innovation was the clock.
2 · Why it matters
Every other club in this group sells the night. Space sold the afternoon: a terrace under the flight path of the island's airport, opening while the sun was up, and a Sunday session that ran until Monday morning. The distinction sounds trivial and reorganised the island's entire economy — hotels, transfers and flight schedules arranged themselves around a club that opened at lunchtime.
Roselló also refused the direction the rest of the market took. He was openly hostile to VIP areas, comparing the arrangement to a Roman theatre with some people in the stands and some in the arena. Space is the counter-argument to LHL-S-155 VIP Room inside the same register.
The house did not fail. Its lease ran out. The Matutes family, who had owned the building since Roselló first rented it, took the room back and opened Hï inside it — which is why this register carries two codes for one address.
3 · Signature & ritual
The terrace, the aircraft passing low overhead as a fixed part of the experience, and a Sunday that began in daylight and ended in daylight.
4 · What this house does not solve
An operator on a lease owns nothing. Twenty-seven years of authorship ended on a contractual date, and no amount of cultural standing altered it.
The brand outlived the room badly. Roselló continued running events under the Space name until a Valencia court annulled his trademark in 2024 in favour of the owning family's company — the register should record that a name and a house can be separated by law.
And a house built on a daytime session is uniquely exposed to noise regulation, licensing hours and the neighbours a beach resort acquires as it develops.
