Nightclubs & Dance Institutions — Part X, Satellite Houses

The shortest-lived hospitality in the Library, and the chapter where that is the finding rather than a weakness. Six of seventeen entries here are closed. Studio 54 ran thirty-three months, Dяgilev twenty-four, Space twenty-seven seasons, the Paradise Garage a decade.

The houses that lasted did so by ceasing to be only nightclubs. Jimmy’z is a members’ door inside a casino company, fifty-five years old. Pacha is a brand with hotels. Buddha-Bar is a record label with rooms. Amnesia survived on its own lease and its own myth.

The chapter is also not a list but a set of arguments, and its founding pairs are dated within months of each other. 1977: Studio 54 sold the image and the Paradise Garage built the culture — house music, the resident DJ and the modern club sound system descend from the Garage, and almost nothing descends from 54. 1978: Le Palace restored a listed music hall where Studio 54 had gutted a television studio, and Les Bains Douches took punk against Le Palace’s disco. All of it comes out of David Mancuso’s Loft in 1970 — a man’s apartment, invitation only, no alcohol sold, and a house this Library will never hold.
