Owners & Builders — Part IX — The Luxury Hospitality Library

These figures command the capital and set the ambition, then hire the authorship. They decide that a house will exist, at what level and to what standard, and they appoint the people who determine what it feels like.

The category covers a wide range of relationships to the product. Vladislav Doronin acquires and extends a brand whose language predates him. Michel Reybier assembles an estate collection. Wang Jianlin and Mohamed Alabbar build hospitality inside much larger property platforms. Victor Sassoon and Savva Mamontov converted fortunes made elsewhere into landmark buildings. In each case the owner's contribution is real, and in each case it is not design.

This distinction matters editorially. It is the difference between commissioning a hotel and composing one, and the Library refuses to collapse the two because the commissioner is better known.

What the group does not settle: delegated authorship still concentrates governance in one person. Several entries here demonstrate what happens when the owner becomes a liability to the institution carrying their name.

Notes on the register. Seven groups follow the model, never the era: the axis is whose capital and whose authorship. Paired entries carry one code where authorship is genuinely joint. A closed record marks a life concluded — the code and the history stand (§11). One candidacy is suspended under §18.4.1 while its subject holds public office, its brand anchor already resident in the register. Reigning heads of state receive no entries; documented authorship is recorded in the Key People line of the house concerned.
