A spa enters this series because it sells a protocol, whether or not it stands outside a hotel. The protocol is the thing that can leave the house that made it.
By that test the oldest entry here is not a room but a method. Franz Xaver Mayr formulated his cure around 1901, having spent four years at a water-treatment spa finding that no reliable criteria for a healthy digestive tract existed anywhere. He built a diagnostic system of standing postures and treated a condition medicine had given up on. It is practised today by houses with no common owner and taught in Austrian and German medical faculties — twenty-four years older than the next protocol, and the only one that has outrun its own institution.
The founders divide cleanly. Some are physicians codifying a treatment — Mayr, Niehans at Clinique La Prairie in 1931. Others were patients. Boonchu Rojanastien demolished his own beach house in 1993 to build what became Asia’s first comprehensive wellness resort, having been convinced by European health farms; Alfredo Bataller spent thirty years with an illness medicine could not resolve and built SHA so that others could recover as he had.
And the group’s quiet correction: Clarins was a spa before it was a cosmetics company. Jacques Courtin-Clarins opened a room in 1954 where he mixed formulations for the client in front of him. The products came out of the treatment room, not the other way round.

| LHL-S-185 | Areka, Joali Being | Bodufushi, Raa Atoll, Maldives — opened 15 November 2021 as the wellbeing centre of Joali Being, the first nature-immersive wellbeing retreat island in the Maldives. Thirty-nine treatment rooms; the Kaashi hydrotherapy hall with a sensory-deprivation room, a Russian banya, water therapies, a salt inhalation room and a hammam; the Ocean Sala meditation deck over water; the Aktar herbology centre with a resident herbalist compounding elixirs; a Learning Centre. Four pillars — Mind, Skin, Microbiome, Energy — developed with Professor Gerry Bodeker of Oxford, Harvard-trained in integrative medicine, who chairs the Mental Wellness Initiative of the Global Wellness Institute. Guests are assessed before arrival, then given an integrative health assessment and movement analysis on the island, and a programme is built from the result. Resident naturopaths, therapists, movement specialists, nutritionists and herbalists; every menu curated by the nutritionists. Architecture Cuneyt Bukulmez, interiors Autoban.
