Contribution to hospitalityThe invention of the beach day as a luxury product — and the demonstration that it need not be scaled

1 · Opening

In 1955 a film crew arrived on an empty stretch of sand at Pampelonne and needed feeding. The family living in a cabin behind the dunes cooked for them. The film was And God Created Woman, the beach became Saint-Tropez, and the kitchen became Club 55.

Seventy years later the house is still on the same sand, still held by the same family, and still refuses to be anywhere else.

2 · Why it matters

Club 55 invented a category that now circles the planet — the beach club as a luxury destination in its own right — and then declined every opportunity the invention offered.

The category it created is worth describing precisely: a place where lunch occupies four hours, where the day itself is the product, where service is barefoot but the prices are not, and where the guest list is regulated by familiarity rather than by a door policy. Every entry in this section of the Library descends from that arrangement, whether in Ibiza, Mykonos, Bodrum or Dubai.

What distinguishes the original is what it did not do. Nikki Beach built a network. Nammos exported itself to Dubai. Club 55 stayed on its dune.

3 · The house

Ownership has remained with the de Colmont family throughout, with Patrice de Colmont its long-standing figure. The house has also spent decades in the politics of its own beach: Pampelonne's concessions, coastal-protection rules and periodic demolition plans have made the family into defenders of the shoreline as much as restaurateurs ⚑ specifics of the current concession framework to confirm.

4 · Signature & ritual

The ritual is the tablecloth and the crudités: raw vegetables in ice, brought without ceremony, at a table on sand under pines. Nothing in the formula is technically difficult, which is exactly why it has proved impossible to copy well.

The second ritual is the booking. Regulars keep the same tables across generations; the house is famous for turning away people who assume that money is the qualification.

“Lunch for a Film Crew” — A family cooks for a crew shooting a film on an empty beach. The film invents Saint-Tropez, the lunch invents the beach club, and seventy years later the descendants of both are everywhere — except that the original never left the sand.
