1 · Opening
Marbella was invented as a destination in 1954 by Alfonso von Hohenlohe, who turned a family finca into a club for his own circle. Ocean Club, opened half a century later beside Puerto Banús, is what that coast became.
2 · Why it matters
The Library records the house as the honest endpoint of a lineage. Hohenlohe's Marbella Club (LHL-H-539 Marbella Club) built a jet-set destination on discretion and personal invitation; two generations later the same coast supports a pool club known internationally for champagne spraying and daybeds sold by the metre.
Neither is a moral judgement. It is a documented arc that every successful destination in this Part risks repeating: invention, imitation, volume.
3 · Signature & ritual
Pool rather than shore, Balinese beds, magnum service and an afternoon that peaks loudly. Puerto Banús supplies the audience.
4 · What this house does not solve
A house built on volume competes only on volume: there is no defence against a newer, louder venue except being newer and louder.
Its clientele is the least durable in the section — the Costa del Sol summer refreshes its crowd annually, which is excellent for cash flow and fatal for the kind of authority Club 55 accumulated over seventy years.
And it sits inside a destination whose reputation it partly shapes: the same spectacle that fills the daybeds is what keeps a certain traveller away from Marbella entirely.
