Contribution to hospitalityThe Amalfitan bathing terrace — the Caprese form on the mainland shore

1 · Opening

The Amalfi Coast has no beaches to speak of. What it has are platforms cut into cliffs, reached by steps or by boat, and a culture of the long lunch above deep water.

2 · Why it matters

The Library records the type through this house: the Amalfitan bathing terrace, the mainland relative of La Fontelina and Da Luigi. Where the beach clubs of this section sell sand and volume, the Tyrrhenian rock houses sell verticality — you climb down to the sea and eat above it.

The houses of the main register along this coast (Il San Pietro, Santa Caterina, Casa Angelina) all operate their own versions; the independent terraces are what remains of the form outside hotel ownership.

3 · Signature & ritual

Steps or boat, platforms on rock, lunch of the coast's cooking, and an afternoon governed by the sun moving off the cliff.

4 · What this house does not solve

⚑ This entry is drafted at the level the sources currently support. Its structural limits are those of the type: total exposure to weather, an access problem that excludes as much as it protects, a season of weeks rather than months, and a coastline whose visitor pressure now threatens the quiet that is the entire product.

The Library will not publish the house-specific candour section until ownership and history are confirmed by two sources.

7 · LHL story

“A Coast Without Beaches” — The Amalfitan answer to the beach club was to cut platforms into the cliff and eat above the water instead of beside it.
