1 · POSITION

The Indian Hotels Company Limited is the corporate institution behind Taj and a wider family of hospitality brands. Incorporated on 1 April 1902, it preceded the December 1903 opening of The Taj Mahal Palace in Bombay. Keeping those events separate reveals two beginnings: the formation of a company and the arrival of its first guests. [1]

2 · BEYOND ONE BUILDING

Tata's chronology records IHCL taking over operations of Udaipur's Lake Palace in 1971 and entering Goa with Fort Aguada in 1974. These moves extended the business into different settings and forms of travel. They also demonstrate why institutional history matters: operating an existing palace and opening a resort are different ways of expanding hospitality. [1]

3 · A FAMILY OF PROPOSITIONS

Taj remains the best-known luxury identity, but IHCL's published portfolio also includes SeleQtions, Vivanta, Ginger and other formats. Its corporate presentation distinguishes luxury, upscale, lean-luxe and homestay segments. The company can therefore serve different kinds of guest without asking every property to reproduce the scale, ceremony or economics of a Taj palace hotel. [2]

4 · WHAT THE COMPANY SUPPLIES

IHCL's development offer describes work that precedes and supports the guest experience: site assessment, design assistance, procurement, staff training, distribution and sales. These shared capabilities help turn an individual property into an operating hotel. They explain the corporate record's purpose alongside the brand record, making visible the organisation that supports otherwise very different places to stay. [3]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ IHCL and Taj are not interchangeable names, and a hotel in the wider portfolio is not automatically a luxury Taj property. Corporate histories also combine original development, acquisitions and operating agreements; each requires its own wording. Expansion targets and signed projects are excluded from the operating history here until there is evidence of actual opening. [1–3]
