Primary contributionCombining an established hotel owner's physical asset, operating platform and capital with a nightlife entrepreneur's programming, artist relationships and event-production culture to create a hotel where entertainment was not an amenity but a principal reason to book
Defining propositionDo not put a nightclub inside the hotel. Make the hotel and the show one product

1 · OPENING

A hotel has rooms.

A club has a crowd.

A concert has a stage.

Ushuaïa asked what happens when those categories stop respecting their borders.

The room overlooks the show.

The pool becomes the audience.

The DJ becomes part of the destination.

The hotel guest is not escaping the event.

The guest has booked the event into the stay.

That required two different forms of authorship.

Abel Matutes Prats brought the hotel platform.

Yann Pissenem brought the entertainment machine.

Ushuaïa exists in the collision.

2 · WHY THIS IS A PAIRED RECORD

The LHL People Register deliberately assigns LHL-P-059 to Abel Matutes Prats & Yann Pissenem as a pair, marks the record active and links it to LHL-H-543 Ushuaïa Ibiza.

Neither biography alone explains the hospitality innovation.

Palladium had hotels before Ushuaïa.

Pissenem had nightlife before Ushuaïa Beach Hotel.

The distinctive product emerges when hotel ownership and entertainment authorship become interdependent.

3 · DO NOT CONFUSE THE MATUTES GENERATIONS

Palladium Hotel Group was founded in Ibiza in the late 1960s by Abel Matutes Juan.

He is the founder-generation hotel entrepreneur.

Abel Matutes Prats, born in Barcelona in 1977, is the next generation.

Palladium's corporate history records his move into senior leadership in the 2006–2007 period and later Presidency.

LHL-P-059 is therefore not a founder-of-Palladium record.

It is a second-generation innovation record centred on the transformation of the Ibiza product.

4 · THE HOTEL PLATFORM ALREADY EXISTS

Before Ushuaïa, the Matutes hotel business already had decades of resort experience.

Balearics.

Canary Islands.

Caribbean.

Large resorts.

Five-star repositioning.

Radical entertainment concepts still require ordinary hotel competence underneath them.

Beds.

Housekeeping.

Food and beverage.

Security.

Revenue management.

Capital expenditure.

The show can be new because the platform is not.

5 · YANN BEFORE USHUAÏA

The Night League's official biography dates Yann Pissenem's nightlife career to the early 1990s.

Rave parties in France and Belgium.

Tourism studies in Barcelona.

Work as a waiter.

Bars.

Music venues.

Afterparties.

Promotion.

He learned the room from inside the room:

lighting, sound, marketing, crowd and guest management.

6 · 2001 — THE NIGHT LEAGUE

Pissenem founded The Night League in 2001.

Nightlife innovation is not simply booking famous DJs.

It requires repeatable production capability.

Programming.

Branding.

Ticketing.

Artist relationships.

Technology.

Stage design.

Crowd flow.

The entertainment company becomes infrastructure.

7 · 2008 — DAYLIGHT

Pissenem moved to Ibiza in 2008 and saw an opportunity for a different kind of clubbing.

Daytime.

Open air.

Headline artists.

High production.

Finish before midnight.

The Night League describes the original Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Club as a concept intended to bridge generations.

Nightlife moves into daylight.

8 · WHY DAYTIME MATTERS

Moving the party into the afternoon changes hospitality economics.

Guests can eat.

Drink.

Swim.

Watch the show.

Return to their room.

Go out again later.

The event overlaps with the hotel day rather than competing with it.

The boundary between leisure and nightlife dissolves.

9 · 2011 — THE AGREEMENT

Palladium's official corporate history calls 2011 a turning point.

Following an agreement with Yann Pissenem, founder of Ushuaïa Beach Club, the former Fiesta Club Playa d'en Bossa was renovated and relaunched as Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel.

Palladium supplies and transforms the hotel asset.

Pissenem supplies the entertainment concept.

The joint product becomes the new flagship.

10 · MORE THAN A CLUB, MORE THAN A HOTEL

Contemporary 2011 coverage described Ushuaïa as becoming more than a club and more than a hotel — a lifestyle product combining accommodation, food, drink and entertainment.

The innovation is category fusion.

The guest does not choose between staying and attending.

The stay is attendance.

11 · THE ROOM AS A BOX SEAT

Traditional hotels try to protect guestrooms from noise.

Ushuaïa can make proximity to the event valuable.

A balcony becomes a private viewing position.

The room becomes a box seat with a bed.

At most resorts, entertainment must not disturb accommodation.

Here, selected accommodation derives part of its value from being inside the entertainment.

12 · THE STAGE BECOMES A HOTEL ASSET

A normal hotel asset register contains rooms, restaurants, pools and spa.

At Ushuaïa, the stage is equally strategic.

Production technology becomes hospitality infrastructure.

Sound.

Lighting.

Screens.

Rigging.

Artist access.

Backstage.

The hotel must think like a venue.

The venue must think like a hotel.

13 · THE DJ BECOMES DEMAND GENERATION

A conventional resort advertises the destination and its facilities.

Ushuaïa can advertise the artist.

The calendar itself generates demand.

Entertainment is no longer a cost centre intended to keep existing guests occupied.

It can be the acquisition channel that causes the booking.

14 · EXPERIENCE BECOMES YIELD

The hybrid model creates several monetisation layers.

Rooms.

Premium rooms with event views.

Tickets.

VIP tables.

Food and beverage.

Sponsorship.

Brand collaborations.

Events.

The same square metre can participate in several revenue systems across the day.

Experience is not merely marketing.

Experience becomes yield.

15 · ABEL'S ROLE — MAKE THE ASSET SAY YES

The hotel-owner side of innovation is often underestimated.

A creative concept can ask for things hotels normally reject.

Noise.

Crowds.

Production infrastructure.

Unusual guest flows.

Heavy wear.

Security complexity.

Seasonal spectacle.

Abel Matutes Prats' contribution is partly institutional permission.

The asset has to say yes to becoming something other than a normal resort.

16 · YANN'S ROLE — MAKE THE CROWD COME

Pissenem's contribution is not simply music.

It is the ability to create anticipation.

Programming.

Artists.

Production.

Brand language.

A recognisable crowd.

The Night League describes itself as an experience-engineering company.

The entertainment is designed as deliberately as a hotel room.

17 · IBIZA ALREADY HAD NIGHTLIFE

Ushuaïa did not invent Ibiza club culture.

Pacha.

Amnesia.

Space.

Privilege.

Decades of DJs, promoters and club communities came first.

The innovation is narrower and more defensible.

Ushuaïa helped fuse high-production Ibiza nightlife directly with a luxury-lifestyle hotel product at unusual scale.

18 · THE HOTEL BECOMES MEDIA

A spectacular event hotel produces images constantly.

Crowd.

Stage.

Pool.

Artists.

Balconies.

Sunset.

The property becomes inherently shareable.

Guests distribute the brand because the experience generates content.

Architecture becomes a background for media production.

19 · FROM USHUAÏA TO HÏ

In 2017 Pissenem and The Night League opened Hï Ibiza in the former Space venue.

This is not a hotel.

It belongs to the entertainment side of the paired legacy.

Hï shows that the production system developed around Ushuaïa could become a broader nightlife platform.

20 · USHUAÏA ENTERTAINMENT AND [UNVRS]

The Night League states that in 2022 Pissenem and partners at Fiesta Hotels & Resorts launched Ushuaïa Entertainment for local and international growth.

In 2025 The Night League launched [UNVRS] in Ibiza, positioning it as a new hyperclub combining high-end service with arena-scale infrastructure and spectacle.

These are later developments.

They demonstrate the trajectory without changing the defining 2011 hotel authorship.

21 · WHAT THEY CHANGED

They helped create a hotel where entertainment became a primary booking motive rather than a secondary amenity.

They fused accommodation, daytime clubbing, headline music programming, VIP service and event production into one hospitality product.

They demonstrated that the hotel room itself could become part of the event architecture.

They turned artist programming into hotel demand generation.

They showed that production technology could function as core hospitality infrastructure.

They created a partnership model in which a hotel company and an entertainment company retained distinct capabilities while producing one guest experience.

They helped push Ibiza hospitality from “hotel near the clubs” toward “hotel as one of the clubs.”

They did not put a nightclub inside the hotel. They made the hotel and the show one product.

22 · WHAT THIS MODEL DOES NOT SOLVE

Noise is not an abstract issue. High-volume events create conflicts with sleep, neighbours and conventional hotel expectations.

The guest base self-selects. What is extraordinary for one traveller may be intolerable for another.

Programming creates dependency. Artist calendars and music trends can become as important as the physical hotel product.

Production is expensive. Technology, talent, security and staging require continuous reinvestment.

Spectacle can overwhelm hospitality fundamentals. A famous lineup does not excuse poor rooms, food or service.

The model is difficult to copy. A stage beside a pool does not create Ushuaïa without Ibiza, artists, brand equity, operational expertise and crowd culture.

Nightlife has externalities. Crowd management, alcohol, transport, noise and safety require serious governance.

Partnership authorship can blur. The 2011 product is strongest when understood as a genuine combination of Palladium's hotel platform and Pissenem's entertainment platform.

The model does not make every hotel better by making it louder.

It demonstrates that, for the right destination and audience, entertainment can become the architecture of demand.

23 · MATUTES PRATS AND HIS FATHER

Abel Matutes Juan founded the hotel group.

Abel Matutes Prats inherited a substantial operating platform and pushed it toward new product categories.

The father builds the hotel institution.

The son becomes important to LHL when he allows that institution to collide with nightlife culture.

This is second-generation authorship rather than founder substitution.

24 · PISSENEM AND SOL KERZNER

Sol Kerzner uses spectacle, casinos, aquariums and large-scale attractions to make resorts into entertainment destinations.

Pissenem works through music, production and nightlife.

Kerzner builds attractions that operate every day.

Pissenem builds a calendar whose changing artists repeatedly renew demand.

Both understand that entertainment can be a reason to travel.

25 · THE PAIR AND ALFONSO VON HOHENLOHE

Alfonso von Hohenlohe helps make Marbella desirable by curating a social world around a hotel.

Matutes Prats and Pissenem industrialise another form of social magnetism.

Alfonso invites the right people.

Ushuaïa books the right artist and engineers the crowd.

Marbella Club makes the hotel feel like a private club.

Ushuaïa makes the hotel feel like the event everybody wants to enter.

28 · LHL STORY — THE ROOM IS A BOX SEAT

A hotel room has a problem.

It is too close to the stage.

The bass is loud.

The crowd is below.

The balcony overlooks thousands of people.

A conventional hotelier sees a complaint.

Ushuaïa sees an upgrade.

The balcony becomes a box seat.

The bed becomes backstage comfort.

The room is no longer protected from the entertainment.

The room is valuable because it is inside it.

Sometimes innovation begins when the defect changes category.

29 · A SECOND STORY — TWO COMPANIES, ONE EXPERIENCE

One company knows hotels.

Rooms.

Housekeeping.

Food.

Capital.

Operations.

The other knows crowds.

DJs.

Sound.

Lighting.

Anticipation.

Neither capability is enough.

A nightclub cannot simply add bedrooms and become a great hotel.

A hotel cannot simply add speakers and become a great club.

So the partnership keeps the capabilities separate.

And makes the guest experience inseparable.

30 · LEGACY

Abel Matutes Prats and Yann Pissenem belong together in the Luxury Hospitality Library because Ushuaïa is most interesting precisely where individual authorship stops being sufficient.

Matutes Prats represents the asset.

Pissenem represents the experience engine.

Asset without experience remains a hotel.

Experience without asset remains an event.

The 2011 innovation fused them.

That fusion helped change Ibiza hospitality.

The hotel no longer needed to apologise for being near nightlife.

It could become nightlife.

The entertainment programme no longer needed to be a peripheral hotel amenity.

It could determine room demand, pricing, guest identity and brand meaning.

The model is not universal.

Most hotels should not become clubs.

That is exactly why Ushuaïa matters.

It demonstrates how radically a hospitality category can change when the physical asset and the cultural experience are designed together.

Abel Matutes Prats and Yann Pissenem did not put a nightclub inside the hotel. They made the hotel and the show one product.

Sources

The current LHL People Register assigns LHL-P-059 to Abel Matutes Prats & Yann Pissenem as a pair, with no lifespan recorded, active status, group Founders & Pioneers, anchor LHL-H-543 Ushuaïa Ibiza, and the flag “admission §4.4.”

Palladium Hotel Group's official history states that the hotel group was founded by Abel Matutes Juan in Ibiza in the late 1960s, records Abel Matutes Prats' senior leadership from the 2006–2007 period, and identifies 2011 as a turning point when an agreement with Yann Pissenem, founder of Ushuaïa Beach Club, led to the renovation of Fiesta Club Playa d'en Bossa and launch of Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel.

The Night League's official biography identifies Yann Pissenem as born in Nancy in 1974, founder of The Night League in 2001, creator of the Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Club concept after moving to Ibiza in 2008, and partner with Fiesta Hotels & Resorts in the 2011 hotel launch. It also documents later Hï Ibiza, Ushuaïa Entertainment and [UNVRS] developments.

Palladium corporate materials identify Abel Matutes Prats as born in Barcelona in 1977 and as a key second-generation executive behind product innovation and the group's later leadership.

Editorial caution: Abel Matutes Juan remains founder of the hotel group; Abel Matutes Prats should not replace him in that attribution. Pissenem did not invent Ibiza nightlife. Ushuaïa's defensible innovation is the fusion of high-production nightlife with a luxury-lifestyle hotel platform. Hï Ibiza and [UNVRS] are later The Night League projects and should not be attributed as joint hotel creations by the pair. Rankings and awards document reputation but are not LHL ratings.

Principal editorial thesis: Abel Matutes Prats and Yann Pissenem did not put a nightclub inside the hotel. They made the hotel and the show one product.
