Club Med Exclusive Collection

Club Med Exclusive Collection is Club Med's highest luxury range rather than an independent hotel company.

Position

Club Med Exclusive Collection is Club Med's highest luxury range rather than an independent hotel company. It is the product of Club Med's long strategic move from post-war vacation-club utopia toward premium and luxury all-inclusive hospitality while retaining the social, sporting and communal DNA created in 1950.

Classification

LHL-438 · P2-30-01. The entry belongs in Part II as a collection/range inside the Club Med corporate system, not as the owner of the underlying resorts.

Parent

The parent institution is Club Méditerranée / Club Med. Exclusive Collection cannot be understood without the parent company's history, operating system, G.O./G.E. culture, all-inclusive model and later upscale repositioning.

1950

Club Med's current heritage page dates the founding moment to 4 June 1950 on Mallorca.

Gérard Blitz

The official heritage narrative places Gérard Blitz at the center of the founding idea: a resistance fighter and former water-polo athlete seeking freedom, sport, nature and shared happiness after the war.

First village

Blitz established the first tent village at Alcúdia, Mallorca.

Gilbert Trigano

Club Med's current heritage material says the tents were rented from Gilbert Trigano; other current Club Med corporate material describes Blitz and Trigano together as the creators/founders of Club Med.

Founder-credit nuance

The primary sources therefore use two formulations: Gérard Blitz as the originating founder/visionary, and Blitz with Gilbert Trigano as the pair who created Club Med. The Library should preserve that nuance rather than force one formula.

All-inclusive invention

Club Med describes itself as the inventor/pioneer of the all-inclusive vacation-club concept.

First-summer scale

The current heritage page says 2,400 people stayed during that first Mallorca summer.

Post-war philosophy

The original proposition was not luxury. It was release from everyday constraints through nature, sport, shared meals and communal life.

GO culture

The first participants and organizers created the G.O. / G.M. social vocabulary that became one of Club Med's most distinctive operating systems.

Association

Club Med began as an association rather than as a conventional hotel corporation.

Permanent villages

The company later moved from tents toward permanent resort structures while retaining the village model.

Agadir

Club Med's current responsibility history dates its first permanent resort at Agadir to 1965 and connects it to rebuilding after the 1960 earthquake.

Mini Club

The Mini Club was created in 1967, making organized childcare one of Club Med's most important additions to the all-inclusive resort proposition.

Sports

Club Med made organized sport and instruction a core part of the vacation product rather than a peripheral resort amenity.

Club Med 2

In 1990 Club Med launched the first cruise of Club Med 2, extending the village/all-inclusive system onto a sailing yacht.

Why luxury required reinvention

The communal village model was culturally powerful but did not automatically translate into twenty-first-century luxury. Club Med had to raise accommodation, food, architecture and service without destroying the freedom and sociability that made the brand recognizable.

Upscale strategy

Club Med's own current employment history dates the launch of its upscale repositioning strategy to 2004.

Why 2004 matters

Exclusive Collection is not an isolated luxury experiment; it is the upper end of a long corporate repositioning away from lower-tier resort inventory.

Trident system

Club Med historically used Trident classifications to differentiate resort levels. The luxury programme grew from the 5-Trident tier and related premium spaces.

First Exclusive Collection resort

Club Med's current corporate timeline identifies La Plantation d'Albion in Mauritius, created in 2007, as the first Exclusive Collection Resort.

Albion significance

Albion demonstrated that Club Med could deliver privacy, architecture, suites/villas and elevated service while retaining the parent all-inclusive model.

Exclusive Collection as range

Club Med explicitly calls Exclusive Collection its luxury range.

Not one property type

The range includes full Exclusive Collection resorts, Exclusive Collection Spaces inside Premium resorts, Villas & Chalets and Club Med 2.

Why this is unusual

Exclusive Collection is therefore not a conventional flag where every hotel is entirely branded and operated at one uniform tier.

Full resorts

A full Exclusive Collection resort applies the luxury proposition to the whole resort.

Exclusive Collection Spaces

A Space is a private luxury enclave within a broader Club Med resort, giving guests access to both the exclusive area and the parent resort's activities.

Villas and Chalets

Private villas and mountain chalet-apartments add another residential-style expression of the collection.

Club Med 2

The sailing yacht shows that Exclusive Collection is an experience tier capable of crossing hotel/resort categories.

Luxury definition

Club Med defines its luxury through freedom, exceptional settings, authenticity, emotion, personal service and the removal of practical constraints.

All-inclusive remains central

The company did not abandon all-inclusive in order to become luxury; it tried to make all-inclusive itself luxurious.

Service additions

Current Exclusive Collection benefits include dedicated concierge, premium drinks/champagne, room-service breakfast in eligible categories, premium Wi-Fi and additional arrival/departure privileges.

Privacy

The luxury layer adds space, privacy and personalized attention to a parent culture historically associated with communal life.

The central tension

Exclusive Collection therefore manages a productive contradiction: private luxury inside a brand founded on collective sociability.

Architecture

Club Med says Exclusive Collection resorts and spaces use renowned architects and designers and architecture inspired by local culture.

Locality

The range seeks distinctive sites and local architectural response rather than one universal palace style.

Cefalù

When Club Med Cefalù opened in 2018, Club Med used the launch to present the Exclusive Collection range and define its premium categories.

Cefalù significance

The Sicilian resort became an important European proof that the luxury repositioning could work outside the tropical island model.

Val d'Isère

Val d'Isère became a full Exclusive Collection mountain resort, showing the concept at ski-resort scale.

Michès

Michès Playa Esmeralda opened as an eco-conscious Dominican resort and became a major Exclusive Collection expression in the Americas.

Seychelles

Club Med Seychelles is another full Exclusive Collection island resort and extends the range into the Indian Ocean.

Current range

The current Club Med site lists full Exclusive Collection resorts including Michès, Seychelles, Cefalù, Val d'Isère and La Plantation d'Albion, alongside villas and Exclusive Collection Spaces.

Spaces today

Current Spaces include luxury enclaves at resorts such as Cancún, Punta Cana, Kani, Valmorel, La Rosière, Tignes and Québec Charlevoix.

Cancún layer

Club Med's current Cancún history says an Exclusive Collection Space was added in 2017 as part of a major renovation.

Why Cancún is useful

A resort opened in 1976 could receive a luxury enclave decades later without ceasing to be the same physical Club Med destination.

Building versus tier

This demonstrates that Exclusive Collection can be an operating/service layer applied to part of an existing resort rather than a new building or separate owner.

Ownership

Club Med's 2022 CSR report says its resort portfolio uses three operating structures: ownership, lease and management contract.

Asset Right

The same source describes an Asset Right strategy aimed at balancing those structures.

Why ownership cannot be assumed

A Club Med Exclusive Collection designation therefore does not establish that Club Med owns the underlying land or resort.

Management contracts

Some resorts can be owned by third parties while Club Med supplies management and the Exclusive Collection operating proposition.

Lease

Other resorts can be leased, giving Club Med operational control without property ownership.

Owned resorts

Club Med also retains ownership exposure in part of the portfolio, so the company is not purely asset-light.

Fosun

Current Club Med material identifies Fosun Tourism Group as shareholder/supporting shareholder behind the modern premium repositioning.

Corporate-control caution

The history of Club Med's ownership after its founding is separate from the history of the Exclusive Collection product; the luxury range should not be treated as a stand-alone company.

Premium transformation

By 2022 Club Med reported 97% of capacity and 95.5% of customers in 4- and 5-Trident products including Villas & Chalets, evidence of how far the repositioning had moved the portfolio.

Why this matters

Exclusive Collection is the apex of a broader transformation rather than a tiny luxury annex attached to a mass-market company.

Families

Club Med's childcare infrastructure remains part of the luxury proposition, especially for affluent families who want high service without giving up activity and children's programming.

Active couples

Current Club Med positioning also targets active couples, preserving the sporting/social side of the founding concept.

Food

Luxury repositioning raised food and beverage expectations toward gourmet dining and premium drinks while retaining inclusive economics.

Sport

The range still includes Club Med's unusually broad sport and instruction system, a direct line back to Blitz's founding vision.

Sociality

Unlike luxury models built around retreat from other guests, Exclusive Collection still allows guests to move between private luxury and the collective energy of the resort.

Sustainability

Club Med frames environmental responsibility as part of a history extending back to early resort operations and now organizes it under Happy to Care.

Agadir and responsibility

Its corporate narrative connects permanent-resort development at Agadir with post-earthquake regional recovery.

Mauritius wastewater

Club Med's responsibility history records early wastewater-treatment investment in Mauritius, although different current pages give slightly different dates for some early sustainability milestones.

Sustainability-date caution

⚑ Club Med's own current pages are not perfectly consistent on certain historical sustainability dates; this master avoids forcing a single date where official material diverges.

Oman pipeline

Club Med currently plans an Exclusive Collection resort on Oman's Musandam Peninsula for 2028.

Pipeline discipline

The Oman property is pipeline and should not be counted as an operating Exclusive Collection resort before verified opening.

Brand-versus-range caution

⚑ Club Med Exclusive Collection is commonly marketed like a luxury brand, but Club Med itself repeatedly calls it a range or luxury line. LHL should preserve that structural distinction.

Founder caution

⚑ Current Club Med sources alternate between 'founded by Gérard Blitz' and 'created/founded by Gérard Blitz and Gilbert Trigano.' The most precise narrative is Blitz as originating visionary/founder, with Trigano joining at the creation stage and becoming the decisive business partner.

First-resort caution

⚑ Club Med's current corporate timeline identifies La Plantation d'Albion in 2007 as the first Exclusive Collection Resort. Later marketing presentations of the range should not be used to backdate the formal collection.

Count caution

⚑ The number of Exclusive Collection products depends on whether one counts full resorts, Spaces, Villas/Chalets and Club Med 2 separately. This master does not manufacture one universal property count.

Ownership caution

⚑ Exclusive Collection status is not evidence of Club Med real-estate ownership; Club Med itself reports ownership, lease and management-contract operating structures.

Luxury-history caution

⚑ Club Med invented its social all-inclusive model in 1950, but the modern upscale repositioning dates from 2004 and the first official Exclusive Collection Resort from 2007. The luxury line should not be retroactively projected onto the early tent villages.

People candidate

Gérard Blitz is a very strong LHL People candidate. He is not merely a company founder: he authored one of the twentieth century's most influential hospitality concepts — communal all-inclusive resort life organized around sport, nature and freedom.

People candidate rationale

Blitz's admission would also correct an imbalance if Gilbert Trigano is already represented: Club Med's own current heritage gives Blitz the originating philosophical role.

Gilbert Trigano

Trigano should retain separate credit for converting the founding concept into a scalable hospitality enterprise and for the long institutional development of Club Med.

People pairing

The most useful LHL treatment is therefore two People records linked to the same institution: Blitz as originating hospitality-concept author and Trigano as co-creator/business builder.

Why Exclusive Collection belongs in history

The collection demonstrates that a hospitality concept can survive radical repositioning if the operator identifies which parts are essential and which can change.

What remained

Sport, sociability, nature, all-inclusive simplicity and G.O. culture remained.

What changed

Tents, austerity and standardized village simplicity gave way at the top end to suites, villas, architecture, concierge service, champagne and privacy.

Institutional significance

Club Med thus moved from a post-war social experiment to a premium resort company without abandoning the central promise of freedom from everyday constraints.

Profile

Club Med Exclusive Collection · LHL-438 · P2-30-01. Parent: Club Med / Club Méditerranée. Founding institutional lineage: Gérard Blitz and Gilbert Trigano, 1950. Modern luxury repositioning: 2004 onward. First official Exclusive Collection Resort in Club Med's current corporate timeline: La Plantation d'Albion, 2007. Product forms: full Exclusive Collection Resorts, Exclusive Collection Spaces, Villas & Chalets and Club Med 2.

Conclusion

Club Med Exclusive Collection is important because it is not the rejection of old Club Med but its selective rewriting. Blitz's original village removed money, schedules and social barriers from the holiday; modern Exclusive Collection removes friction through a different material language — space, privacy, concierge service, architecture and premium inclusions. The underlying idea remains recognizably Club Med: everything organized so the guest can be free. That continuity is why the luxury range belongs in the Library, and why Gérard Blitz deserves his own People record.
