Lake Victoria Serena Golf Course at Kigo connects a resort stay near Kampala with an eighteen-hole layout by Golfplan’s Kevin Ramsey. The American Society of Golf Course Architects’ magazine records the completed eighteen holes opening for play in 2018, after a project developed in two phases. Golf added a distinct activity to the existing lakeside destination. [1]
2 · MAKING STABLE GROUND
Ramsey’s published account describes difficult construction near the shoreline, where papyrus wetlands required filling and stabilisation. Excavated lakes supplied material for shaping and drainage. This is consequential evidence about the landscape: the finished fairways were produced through substantial earthworks, not simply placed on ready-made golfing ground beside the water. [1]
3 · WATER AND THE CHOICE OF ROUTE
The design used lakes as strategic obstacles while providing alternative lines for less accomplished players. The operating club identifies an island green at the finishing hole as a distinctive feature. Water consequently performs several roles within the experience: distant setting, constructed landscape element and immediate obstacle to a particular shot. [1, 2]
4 · A PLACE TO LEARN AND RETURN
The club lists a driving range, caddies, equipment rental and instruction for adults and juniors. Its published fees distinguish members, public players and hotel guests. These arrangements connect the course to more than the overnight visitor: it can serve a local playing community while also giving resort guests a reason to extend their stay. [2, 3]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
The construction account comes from the designer in a professional association’s publication. It documents the work and his intentions, not an independent environmental assessment. Filling wet ground should not disappear behind picturesque lakeside descriptions. Nor is this the beginning of golf in Uganda: the same account places the project alongside a much older golfing tradition. [1]
