1 · POSITION
The Boulders Club in Carefree, Arizona, places golf among large granite formations and Sonoran Desert vegetation. Its North and South courses are credited to Jay Morrish. The setting gives the game a close relationship with the resort’s identity: the boulders are both a name recognised before arrival and physical features encountered during a round. [1, 2]
2 · BUILDING IN STAGES
The club’s chronology records an opening in January 1984 with a restaurant, lounge and eighteen holes. Further golf development followed: the Lake Nine opened after redesign in 1986, and nine additional holes brought the total to thirty-six in 1991. The present two-course offering therefore should not be compressed into one opening event. [2]
3 · A DESERT ROUTE
The club identifies the Boulder Pile and Rosie’s Rock among the formations golfers encounter. These landmarks distinguish the course from a layout whose character depends primarily on manufactured water hazards or ornamental planting. They also give the visitor a way to remember the route: particular shots become associated with recognisable pieces of the surrounding terrain. [1]
4 · DIFFERENT FORMS OF ACCESS
Membership, a resort stay and a public tee time are not equivalent ways into the property. The club’s booking guidance states that, since January 2023, the South Course has served resort and public play while the North is designated for members. This division qualifies the broad description of a resort with two courses. [2, 3]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
The current layouts carry Morrish’s credit, but their history includes additions, redesign and later renovation. The club records bunker work on both courses in 2021 and a South Course greens renovation in 2022. Neither the original opening year nor the enduring desert setting establishes that every playing surface is unchanged. Access arrangements are also operating policies, subject to revision. [1–3]
