Handara places golf in the cool highlands around Bedugul, Bali, rather than along the island’s beach resorts. Founded by Ibnu Sutowo, the property combined an eighteen-hole course with accommodation in a mountain setting. Its significance lies in that alternative geography of a Balinese stay: the journey inland leads to a different climate and form of recreation. [1, 3]
2 · THE DESIGN TEAM
The resort’s history credits Peter Thomson with associates Michael Wolveridge and Ronald Fream. Its detailed golf guide adds a more specific account of Wolveridge’s involvement, including the initial site visit, design and construction supervision. Read together, these sources support a collaborative attribution while giving Wolveridge a substantial practical role. They do not justify replacing the team with one celebrated name. [1, 2]
3 · A HOLE NAMED WOLVERIDGE
The ninth hole carries Wolveridge’s name. The guide describes a dogleg par five climbing back towards the clubhouse, with a diagonally set green and bunkers shaping the approach. This makes the architect’s connection tangible within the round. The commemorative name is accompanied by an explanation of how the hole asks to be played. [2]
4 · GOLF AND THE MOUNTAIN STAY
Handara’s accommodation and golf packages join rooms, meals and rounds into a single visit. Its sustainability report also presents the mountain setting as an attraction for accompanying guests who do not play. Golf can be the reason one person chooses the destination while the landscape supplies another person’s reason to come. [2, 3]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
The resort’s chronology is internally inconsistent. Its history page dates construction to 1974 and opening to 1976; the golf guide’s Wolveridge account gives an opening in 1972. No single opening year is adopted here. The discrepancy requires clarification from archival records, and should remain visible rather than being resolved by choosing the most frequently repeated date. [1, 2]
