Marcio Kogan

Marcio Kogan belongs in the Library through the design of places where private life and hospitality meet. His work includes the original Hotel Fasano São Paulo, interiors for Fasano’s later Itaim development, the island resort Patina Maldives and the interiors of L’AND Vineyards in Portugal. These commissions differ in scale and scope. Together they show how an architectural practice can work on a whole resort, a hotel building or a carefully defined interior programme without those contributions becoming interchangeable. 1 · POSITION

[2, 4, 7, 10]

2 · FORMATION IN SÃO PAULO

Studio MK27’s biography records Kogan’s graduation from FAU-Mackenzie in 1976 and dates the office’s beginnings to the late 1970s. It also describes his work as a filmmaker, including a first feature in 1988. Film is therefore part of his professional formation, rather than simply a metaphor applied by later critics. The studio presents its architectural interests through formal simplicity, close attention to detail and an engagement with Brazilian modernism. These are the practice’s own statements of identity. [1]

3 · THE STUDIO IS A COLLECTIVE

The official team account identifies Diana Radomysler with interior-design leadership, Renata Furlanetto and Suzana Glogowski with architectural direction, and Mariana Simas with executive leadership. Project records then supply more specific credits. Kogan’s position as founder and design author should be retained alongside those responsibilities. A People card can describe his contribution without turning the work of the studio into an anonymous supporting cast. [1]

4 · THE FIRST FASANO HOTEL

Studio MK27’s original Hotel Fasano record credits both Marcio Kogan and Isay Weinfeld, with design dated March 1996 and completion September 2003. Fasano’s history independently confirms the São Paulo Jardins hotel’s opening in 2003 and the movement of its restaurant into the hotel. This commission is a firm early hospitality anchor. It also makes clear why later descriptions of Patina as Kogan’s first hotel cannot be accepted literally. [2, 3]

5 · FROM GASTRONOMY TO A HOUSE OF HOSPITALITY

Fasano’s corporate history treats the first São Paulo hotel as a major extension of the family’s restaurant business and the fulfilment of Gero Fasano’s ambition. The architectural commission therefore served an established culture of hosting. In the Library’s interpretation, its significance lies in giving that culture a broader physical setting: rooms and public spaces joined the restaurant experience. Kogan and Weinfeld supplied the architecture; the Fasano family’s operating and gastronomic authorship remains a separate contribution. [2, 3]

6 · ITAIM: A DIFFERENT COMMISSION

Fasano São Paulo Itaim belongs to a later mixed-use development. The operator’s Portuguese-language property page distinguishes Kogan’s interior-design contribution from the architecture by aflalo/gasperini. Studio MK27’s hotel record credits Kogan, Diana Radomysler and co-architect Luciana Antunes and dates its work’s completion to April 2023. Fasano’s own history places the second São Paulo hotel in 2023. These sources establish a completed hospitality project, while also requiring care over the scope of each practice’s role. [3, 4, 12]

7 · ARCHITECTURE AROUND THE INTERIORS

The aflalo/gasperini archive describes the Itaim complex as a hotel, residential building, commercial spaces and restaurants on one site. A lower hotel volume faces Rua Pedroso Alvarenga, with the residential tower behind it. The archive also describes a landscaped pedestrian route that connects the development to the street. These urban and building-scale decisions belong in the complex’s architectural record. They should not automatically be attributed to Kogan because his interiors are prominent in the hotel’s presentation. [6]

8 · RESIDENTIAL WORK HAS ITS OWN RECORD

Studio MK27 publishes a separate Fasano Itaim residential-interiors entry, dated September 2018 for design and August 2019 for completion. It credits Kogan and Radomysler, with Antunes as co-architect. This is evidence for the named interior commission, not proof that the entire residential tower or hotel opened in 2019. The distinction is particularly important for a People nomination originating in private residences: a published apartment interior and the delivery of the whole real-estate development are different events. [5]

9 · FURNITURE, MEMORY AND BRAND CONTINUITY

The Itaim hotel’s official description identifies a mix of Brazilian furniture, including pieces by Sergio Rodrigues, Jader Almeida and Studio MK27. It also describes Italian imagery selected by Gero Fasano and Minotti furniture in the lobby bar. Such choices connect an interior to both a national design culture and a family’s Italian references. The resulting atmosphere has several contributors. Kogan’s role is strongest when presented through documented design responsibilities, with makers, artists and the hotelier’s own selections still visible. [12]

10 · PATINA MALDIVES: A COMPLETED RESORT

Patina’s FLOW release confirms that Patina Maldives, Fari Islands opened on 18 May 2021. Its launch-era programme comprised 90 beach and water pool villas alongside 20 Fari Studios. The release identifies it as the first property of Patina Hotels & Resorts, a Capella Hotel Group concept. These are operational and brand milestones. They provide firmer evidence than pre-opening announcements for discussing the realised resort and its place in the hospitality landscape. [8]

11 · PATINA’S NAMED DESIGN TEAM

Studio MK27 dates the Maldives project to 2016 and completion to 2021. Its credits name Kogan with co-architect Renata Furlanetto, Diana Radomysler for interiors and Pedro Ribeiro as interior-design co-author. Pontiac Land Group is identified as developer, Vladimir Djurovic Landscape Architects for landscape, The Flaming Beacon for lighting and The Artling for art consultancy. The resort’s overall experience therefore emerges from a coordinated team of disciplines. The credits are integral to understanding Kogan’s work, not an optional appendix to it. [7]

12 · ARCHITECTURE THAT YIELDS TO THE VIEW

In his Design Hotels interview, Kogan explained Patina through an ambition to make the architecture visually discreet and to give priority to sky and sea. He described continuity between inside and outside, supported by tactile materials and large openings. This is useful evidence of design intention. The Library reads it as an alternative to architectural spectacle: the building can frame the experience of a place while allowing the surroundings to remain its most conspicuous feature. That reading does not establish environmental performance. [9]

13 · PRIVACY AND SOCIABILITY ON ONE ISLAND

The studio’s Patina account describes a timber circulation axis organising villas, the main building, spa and the village’s common spaces. Landscape helps provide privacy while drawing attention to shared destinations. The programme moves between retreat and social encounter rather than treating the island only as a collection of isolated rooms. For hospitality, the important design question is how easily a guest can change between those modes. This is an interpretation of the published spatial strategy, not a measured study of guest behaviour. [7]

14 · THE CLIENT AND THE WIDER CONVERSATION

The Design Hotels interview connects the commission with Evan Kwee and describes the challenge of coordinating a geographically dispersed design team. It also identifies James Turrell’s site-specific artwork and Cássio Vasconcellos’s photography. This places the resort within a conversation between architecture, commissioning and art. The relationship with Kwee connects to the existing People entry, The Kwee Family — Evan Kwee · LHL-P-082. The artist’s work and the developer’s brief should remain distinct from architectural authorship. [9]

15 · A SPA IS MORE THAN ITS PROGRAMME

Patina’s opening-era FLOW material describes a 1,500-square-metre wellness setting with six double treatment suites. For this card, the relevant evidence is the presence and scale of that hospitality programme. The release’s therapeutic and technological claims are not adopted as proven outcomes. Designing spaces for rest, treatment and privacy is a documented architectural relationship; demonstrating the medical effectiveness of services offered within them would require a different body of evidence. [8]

16 · L’AND VINEYARDS: INTERIOR AUTHORSHIP

Studio MK27’s L’AND Vineyards record credits the building architecture to Promontório Arquitetos and the interiors to Studio MK27. It names Kogan with co-architects Diana Radomysler and Suzana Glogowski and dates completion to May 2011. The assignment gives Kogan a substantial hospitality relationship in Portugal, but not sole authorship of the estate’s architecture. This precise separation is more informative than a shortened description of L’AND as simply a Kogan hotel. [10]

17 · THE LANDSCAPE AS A GUEST EXPERIENCE

L’AND’s current website presents a wine retreat in the Alentejo, overlooking the landscape towards Montemor’s castle. Its Sky Suites allow the bedroom ceiling to open to the night sky, while other accommodation uses patios and outdoor living areas. The operator also credits Michael Biberstein’s artwork and distinguishes newer villa interiors designed by L’AND. These details show why the property needs to be read by component and phase. Kogan’s original interior commission does not automatically extend to every later room or villa. [11]

18 · A RESIDENTIAL SENSIBILITY IN HOSPITALITY

Across the selected commissions, domestic and public settings meet in different ways. Patina combines private villas with common places; Itaim brings residential interiors into a hotel-and-housing development; L’AND makes the surrounding landscape part of the stay. The Library’s synthesis is that hospitality here depends on the calibration of thresholds, materials and shared spaces. This is a comparison of documented projects, not a claim that one formula was reproduced unchanged across different climates, clients or operating models.

19 · RELATED HOUSES, PRACTICES AND PEOPLE

Fasano Hotels · LHL-059 and Patina Hotels & Resorts · LHL-105 are confirmed brand anchors. Individual house or project relationships should be maintained for Hotel Fasano São Paulo Jardins, Fasano São Paulo Itaim, the separately credited Itaim residential interiors, Patina Maldives, Fari Islands and L’AND Vineyards. No unverified house or residential code is assigned here.

Strong People cross-references include Isay Weinfeld, Diana Radomysler, Renata Furlanetto, Suzana Glogowski, Pedro Ribeiro and Luciana Antunes for documented design collaboration. Evan Kwee already has a confirmed registry relationship. Gero Fasano, Vladimir Djurovic and James Turrell merit links for commissioning, landscape and art respectively. Studio MK27, aflalo/gasperini, Promontório and Pontiac Land Group should remain separate practice or company relationships. These recommendations identify substantive connections without assuming that every candidate is absent from the wider register. [1–12]

20 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ The Design Hotels interview includes a statement that MK27 had never designed a hotel before Patina. The documented 2003 Fasano commission contradicts a literal reading; this card does not repeat the first-hotel claim. [2, 9]

⚑ MK27’s Fasano Itaim hotel page uses the broad heading “architecture and interiors”, while the operator distinguishes Kogan’s interiors from aflalo/gasperini’s architecture. This card preserves both records and does not assign the whole complex to MK27. The residential entry’s 2019 completion date remains specific to its published commission. [4–6, 12]

Most evidence comes from designers and operators. Statements about harmony with nature describe intentions and presentation, not an independently audited ecological outcome. Project credits do not establish sole personal authorship, hotel operation, property ownership or the design of every subsequent addition. The record concentrates on completed hospitality work; inclusion in a practice’s project index alone is not treated as evidence that a scheme was built.

21 · ASSESSMENT

Kogan’s contribution is most legible at the meeting point of architecture, interiors and lived experience. His hospitality work gives weight to how a person arrives, withdraws, looks outward and joins others. Its range also demonstrates why precise attribution matters: a shared hotel design, a resort and an interior commission can each be important without becoming the same kind of authorship. The strongest Library record preserves that range and the named collaborators who helped turn it into places guests can inhabit.
