He inherited the Baden-Baden concession from his father in 1848 and ran it into its greatest period. His stated understanding was that a successful casino should not focus solely on gambling but embrace other forms of entertainment — so he brought famous actors and musicians to the town, and when new gaming rooms were added in 1855 he had them designed and decorated by the best architects and artists he could get.
2 · ⚑ WHY THIS IS THE ENTRY
Every integrated resort in Part I Volume 10 is a restatement of this. Wynn, Melco, Galaxy, Sands China, MGM, SJM: the theatre, the restaurants, the shopping, the architecture treated as the draw and the tables as one attraction among several. Édouard Bénazet reached that conclusion in the 1850s, in a spa town in the Black Forest, and the Library records the origin where it happened rather than where the industry likes to place it.
3 · WHAT THIS MODEL DOES NOT SOLVE
The model still depends on a legal asymmetry. Baden-Baden flourished because France had banned what Germany permitted, exactly as Macau and Nevada later flourished on the same principle. Entertainment makes a casino a destination; it does not make it independent of the law that lets it exist. ⚑ Dates for Édouard’s birth, death and the end of his tenure are not established here.
