A French casino operator who took the Baden-Baden concession in 1838, a few years after the French prohibition had begun sending players over the border, and introduced roulette there. He ran it until his death in 1848.
2 · WHY HE IS IN THE LIBRARY
He is the first half of a two-generation invention. What he built was a gambling business run properly; what his son did with it changed the category. The Library records both because §21 requires a line to name its members, and because the second step is unintelligible without the first.
