1 · POSITION

Robert “Rob” Bailey III designed the working elevator system that allowed occupants of Porsche Design Tower to travel with their cars from street level to private garages beside their homes. The assignment combined passenger transport, freight-scale loads, automated vehicle transfer, rotation, identification and residential safety. He belongs in the Library because he converted an extraordinary development proposition into an operating hospitality mechanism. The sky-garage model was then repeated and enlarged at Bentley Residences and echoed in automotive residences elsewhere.

2 · THE NARROW CLAIM

Bailey should not be credited as inventor of the car elevator, automated parking or the whole Porsche Design Tower. Nor should he replace Gil Dezer as named patent inventor of the passenger-and-vehicle system. His documented authorship is narrower and still important: ENR states that Bailey designed the Dezervator system, and UL records Mid-American Elevator as helping design and construct it. He was the engineer who made the first full-scale version work.

3 · THE LIBRARY TEST

The admission test asks whether the subject created or remade a model that others reproduced. Porsche Design Tower supplies the built proof. Bentley Residences supplies the direct sequel through four new Dezervators planned by the same development platform. The second project does not prove that Bailey personally designed its machinery. It proves that the engineering model he helped establish became a repeatable residential product.

4 · WHY GROUP I

Bailey is placed in Pioneers & Inventors because his authorship is technical and first-generation. He did not merely operate an existing lift or manage a completed building; he designed an unprecedented combination for residential use. “Pioneer” is the safer word than “patent inventor.” The patent record names Gil Dezer. The engineering record names Bailey as designer.

5 · WHY NOT DESIGNERS & ARCHITECTS

Bailey did not design the tower’s architecture or sign its architectural documents. Sieger Suarez Architects integrated the system into the plan, structure and homes. Group VII would blur machine engineering with architecture. Group I preserves the nature of his contribution.

6 · WHY NOT OPERATORS & STEWARDS

The system eventually became part of residential operations, but Bailey’s decisive work occurred before occupation. He designed and tested infrastructure rather than serving as the building’s operator. Later maintenance teams and association engineers kept the system running. They inherited the machine; they did not author its first built form.

7 · PROFESSIONAL RECORD

ENR described Bailey in 2016 as a 35-year veteran of complex industrial elevator systems and as president of Chicago-based Mid-American Elevator. The company’s own history later said he completed the elevators at Porsche Design Tower and called them among the largest and most complicated it had built. The available sources do not provide a full biography, birth year or complete project list. The master therefore concentrates on the documented system.

8 · MID-AMERICAN ELEVATOR

Mid-American Elevator was the specialist company through which Bailey undertook the Dezervator assignment. Its experience lay in heavy, custom and transit or industrial lift work rather than in decorative luxury products. That background was essential. The project needed machinery capable of freight-scale loads while offering the controlled ride expected of a passenger elevator.

9 · INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

ENR cited Bailey’s earlier work on a complex system for NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building as evidence of his industrial experience. The reference establishes the type of engineering problem he had handled, not a complete NASA project attribution. Porsche Design Tower required the same willingness to treat the elevator as a custom machine rather than a standard catalogue installation.

10 · THE DEVELOPMENT BRIEF

Gil Dezer wanted residents to park cars in private garages beside apartments in a 60-storey oceanfront tower. The driver and passengers were to remain with the car during vertical travel. The brief joined luxury privacy with an engineering problem. It asked the lift to become the front door of the home.

11 · WHY THE BRIEF WAS UNUSUAL

Vehicle lifts already existed, and automated parking systems could move empty cars. Some buildings had elevated garages. The uncommon element was the complete combination: people remained inside the vehicle while a high-speed system identified, lifted, rotated and transferred it to an assigned residential garage. Bailey’s task was to make these previously separate functions behave as one certified sequence.

12 · PASSENGER AND FREIGHT PRINCIPLES

ENR described the resulting system as a combination of high-speed and freight-elevator concepts. A freight lift can carry weight but usually lacks the speed and domestic ride expected here; a passenger lift offers comfort but not the vehicle envelope or transfer machinery. Bailey’s design had to resolve both conditions simultaneously.

13 · THE THREE-LIFT ARRANGEMENT

Porsche Design Tower uses three large vehicular lifts around its central core. Each serves garages placed at different angular positions on the residential floors. The number of lifts increases capacity and provides some resilience, but it also multiplies motors, controls, turntables, platforms and maintenance points.

14 · REPORTED LOAD

ENR reported that each robotic elevator could transport a total load of approximately 40,000 pounds. That figure includes the vehicle, occupants and the substantial machinery associated with the cabin and transfer system. The capacity places the Dezervator far outside ordinary passenger-lift design.

15 · REPORTED SPEED

The system was reported at up to 800 feet per minute. High speed was necessary because a slow ride through a tall building would turn privacy into delay. The engineering problem was therefore not only lifting weight. It was doing so smoothly enough for occupants seated inside a vehicle.

16 · THE LARGE HOISTWAY

Construction reporting described a central vehicular hoistway roughly 55 feet wide. This dimension shows how deeply the machine shaped the tower. Bailey’s system could not be inserted after the architecture was fixed. It required a building designed around its footprint, clearances and access.

17 · VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

The patent describes sensors such as RFID or barcode readers that associate a vehicle with parking information. The system can then route the car toward the correct lift and home. This makes the vehicle itself part of the access protocol. The machine recognises where the car belongs before the owner reaches an ordinary button panel.

18 · POSITIONING AT THE BASE

The driver enters a controlled loading area and positions the car for transfer. Guidance, sensors and doors must confirm that the vehicle sits within the allowable envelope. A luxury experience depends on this stage feeling intuitive. Misalignment would turn a seamless arrival into an industrial manoeuvre.

19 · ENGINE-OFF CONDITION

The driver switches off the engine before the system accepts the vehicle. The patent uses carbon-monoxide sensors and control logic to deny loading or parking when engine operation is detected. The safety principle is straightforward: an internal-combustion vehicle cannot be allowed to run inside a sealed lift and residential garage sequence.

20 · THE TRANSLATING PLATFORM

A platform moves beneath the vehicle, supports it and translates into or out of the lift cabin. The driver does not simply drive from street to elevator and from elevator to garage under ordinary control. The transfer device allows the building to take over precise placement.

21 · ROTATION

The cabin or its floor rotates the vehicle so it can align with garages around the circular core. ENR described turntables within the elevator cabins. Rotation solves both arrival geometry and departure orientation. Without it, the circular tower would require awkward reversing or larger transfer spaces.

22 · THE ASSIGNED GARAGE

At the residential floor, the transfer platform deposits the vehicle into the garage associated with the home. The owner then enters the residence through a private threshold. The lift is therefore not only vertical transportation. It completes the last movement from common infrastructure to domestic territory.

23 · CARRYING HUMAN PASSENGERS

Bailey identified the combination of car and human passengers as the critical difference from earlier sky-garage systems. People inside the vehicle introduce life-safety, ride-quality, communication and emergency requirements beyond automated storage. This is the point at which parking infrastructure becomes part of hospitality experience.

24 · MOTION CONTROLS

The patent contemplates internal motion sensing and logic to prevent unsafe parking when movement is detected. Doors, trunks, occupants and loose objects all create possible conflicts with transfer machinery. The system therefore requires a controlled vehicle condition, not simply a weight calculation.

25 · DOOR AND INTERLOCK LOGIC

Street doors, cabin doors and residential-floor doors must open only in the correct sequence. The platform, turntable and lift cannot move when an opening is unsecured. The invisible interlock logic is what allows an extravagant ritual to feel ordinary.

26 · COMMUNICATION AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Any passenger-carrying elevator requires communication, emergency procedures and rescue planning. The Dezervator adds occupants who may remain seated inside a vehicle and garages that do not resemble normal elevator lobbies. The publicly available sources do not publish the full rescue protocol. Its existence and regular review are necessary operational assumptions, not marketing details.

27 · THE CHICAGO PROTOTYPE

Before final installation, a full-scale prototype was built and tested near Chicago. ENR reported that the system had been constructed and operated at a test site before installation; UL described a prototype tower used for risk assessment. This step was central to Bailey’s authorship. A drawing could not prove the interaction of weight, speed, transfer, rotation and occupants.

28 · WHY FULL-SCALE TESTING MATTERED

The vehicle envelope, tyre position, suspension movement and passenger behaviour are difficult to simulate completely in fragments. Full-scale testing allowed the team to observe the sequence as a system. It also gave safety specialists and regulators evidence for a machine that did not fit a familiar residential category.

29 · UL’S ROLE

Mid-American Elevator brought UL into the project for testing and risk assessment. UL worked with the elevator company, the development team and Porsche Design through the process. UL did not author the development concept. Its role was to challenge, assess and help establish a path to safe operation.

30 · CODES AND APPROVALS

A first-of-kind residential lift cannot rely only on brand confidence. It must satisfy building, elevator, fire and life-safety authorities. The sources reviewed do not publish every approval document or variance. The completed and occupied system demonstrates that a regulatory path was achieved, but the master does not reconstruct it from inference.

31 · ARCHITECTURE-ENGINEERING INTEGRATION

Bailey’s machinery and Sieger Suarez’s architecture were interdependent. The architects reserved the core, garage geometry and structural openings; the elevator team defined loads, clearances, movement and equipment access. The result belongs to neither discipline alone.

32 · CONSTRUCTION INTEGRATION

Coastal Construction coordinated installation inside a rising tower. Large components had to be fabricated, shipped, lifted, aligned and commissioned while structural and architectural work progressed. A custom system can fail through poor coordination even when its concept is sound. Delivery required the contractor to treat the elevator as a primary construction package.

33 · THE PATENT BOUNDARY

US9016999B2 names Gil Dezer as inventor. Its claims cover a passenger-and-vehicle elevator with a translating platform, rotation and safety sensing. Bailey is not named as inventor on that patent. The Library therefore does not call him the patent holder or legal inventor of the claimed system.

34 · DESIGNER AND INVENTOR ARE NOT IDENTICAL

A developer may originate a system concept and secure patent claims while an engineer designs the machinery that realises it. Those roles can overlap, but the Porsche record documents them separately. Dezer’s People master records product and patent authorship. Bailey’s records technical design and delivery.

35 · WHAT BAILEY DID NOT OWN

No source reviewed shows Bailey owning the tower, selling residences, licensing Porsche Design or controlling the condominium after completion. His authorship did not arise from capital or title. This makes him a useful Library subject. The building would not have been the same building without his paid technical work.

36 · COMPLETION AS PROOF

The tower was presented as completed in March 2017. Residents subsequently used the Dezervators as ordinary access infrastructure. Completion separates Bailey from many engineers attached only to proposals. His system crossed the distance between prototype and inhabited building.

37 · OPERATIONAL EVIDENCE

Association newsletters document continued Dezervator use, car-concierge service and a planned motor upgrade. The current association site still presents the system as the means by which owners and cars reach in-unit garages. This does not prove flawless operation. It proves sustained relevance to the occupied building.

38 · THE 2021 MOTOR UPGRADE

A March 2021 newsletter said changes recommended by “Germany” would be made to the Dezervator 2 motor, with cars on one residence line temporarily retained in their garages. The association expected smoother and faster shuttle operation afterward. The note shows that first-generation machinery continued to evolve after delivery.

39 · SPECIALIST MAINTENANCE

A unique lift requires technicians, spare parts, software support and institutional memory. The association cannot treat it like a decorative amenity that may simply be closed without consequence. Bailey’s invention case therefore carries a stewardship lesson: the more distinctive the machine, the more important its maintenance ecosystem.

40 · THE CAR CONCIERGE LAYER

The Dezervator did not eliminate human service. Porsche Design Tower pairs it with car concierge, valet, washing and maintenance coordination. The machine creates private transport; people manage exceptions and care. Together they form an automotive hospitality system.

41 · PRIVACY AS A MECHANICAL SERVICE

Traditional luxury privacy is delivered by doormen, valets and discreet corridors. The Dezervator replaced part of that human chain with controlled mechanical movement. Bailey’s engineering therefore affected hospitality directly. It changed who the resident encountered between road and home.

42 · TIME AS SERVICE

At 800 feet per minute, the system was designed to prevent the journey with a car from becoming a slow novelty. Speed supported the promise that the owner could use the feature every day. A luxury machine succeeds when its spectacle disappears into convenience.

43 · BENTLEY’S FOUR DEZERVATORS

Bentley Residences was announced with four Dezervators and larger private garages. Bentley’s official material attributes the concept to its partners at Dezer Development. The sequel is important because it treats the system as established product infrastructure rather than an unrepeatable experiment.

44 · BAILEY’S ROLE AT BENTLEY IS UNPROVEN

No source reviewed for this master states that Bailey or Mid-American Elevator designed the Bentley system. The four-lift project may use different suppliers, controls or engineering teams. The Library therefore credits Bailey with the first completed model, not with every later system bearing the Dezervator name.

45 · BROADER AUTOMOTIVE REPETITION

Bugatti Residences and other automotive projects have promoted car lifts, private garages or display spaces for selected residences. Some use ramps rather than lifts; some serve only penthouses. They demonstrate that “the car at home” became a recognised luxury proposition. They do not all copy Bailey’s mechanism.

46 · THE DISTINCTION FROM AUTOMATED PARKING

Automated parking generally removes an unoccupied car to shared storage. The Porsche system carries occupants and delivers the car to an assigned private garage adjacent to the home. Bailey’s design lies at the intersection of passenger elevator, freight elevator and parking robot rather than belonging wholly to any one category.

47 · THE DISTINCTION FROM A CAR RAMP

A ramp lets the driver remain in control but consumes enormous floor area and requires long circulation. A Dezervator concentrates movement in the core and automates alignment. The trade-off is greater dependence on machinery, software and maintenance.

48 · THE DISTINCTION FROM A VEHICLE DISPLAY LIFT

Some private houses use a small lift to move one car between a garage and a display room. Porsche Design Tower serves many owners across a tall shared building. Scale and common use transform the problem. The system must route different vehicles reliably without sacrificing residential access.

49 · ENGINEERING AS HOSPITALITY AUTHORSHIP

Luxury hospitality is often narrated through founders, designers and chefs. Bailey’s work shows that a machine can also author the guest or resident experience. The moment of arrival, the preservation of privacy and the display of a collection were all changed by elevator engineering.

50 · WHO REPRODUCED THE MODEL

The direct named reproduction is Bentley Residences, where Dezer Development expanded the number of Dezervators from three to four. The broader reproduction appears in automotive residences that treat private vehicle access and display as a defining amenity. The model copied was not every bolt of Bailey’s system. It was the engineering possibility he proved at full scale.

51 · LIMITS OF BIOGRAPHY

Public sources provide strong technical attribution but little personal biography. Bailey’s birth year, education and full employment chronology were not established from authoritative sources reviewed for this master. The Library does not fill those gaps from people-search databases or infer that he remains in the same daily role in 2026. Mid-American’s site says his son manages day-to-day operations.

52 · LIMITS OF TECHNICAL DISCLOSURE

The patent and engineering press explain the system concept, but detailed shop drawings, software architecture, certification files, failure modes and maintenance contracts are not public in the reviewed record. The master therefore describes the documented mechanism without pretending to be an engineering manual.

53 · CANDOUR

The strongest statement about Bailey — that he designed the Dezervator — comes from Engineering News-Record and is consistent with UL and Mid-American’s own account. The exact division of design work among Bailey, his company’s engineers, suppliers and consultants is not published in full. Gil Dezer is the sole named inventor on the cited United States patent. Bentley proves repetition of the product model, but Bailey’s participation in that later project is not documented. “First in the world” language is retained only as an attributed contemporary belief, not as an independently exhaustive survey of every earlier vehicle lift.

54 · TIMELINE AND LHL CONNECTIONS

55 · FINAL ASSESSMENT

Rob Bailey did not originate the desire to put a Porsche beside a living room, and he did not own the patent that described the development system. He did the indispensable middle work: he designed the first full-scale machine capable of carrying residents and their cars at high speed through an occupied residential tower and transferring them to private garages. That achievement changed an extravagant sales idea into repeatable infrastructure. Bentley’s four-lift sequel confirms the model.
