EDITORIAL NOTE

**Soneva is a portmanteau of their two names, and the register treats the entry the same way.** Sonu Shivdasani, British-Indian, Eton and Oxford; Eva Malmström, Swedish, fifteen years a model; they met in 1986, first visited the Maldives together in 1987, leased an island in 1990 and opened **Soneva Fushi in 1995** on Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll — a site that had already failed once as a resort because it was too hard to reach. **At the time the Maldives was a three-star diving destination.** They made it a luxury one. The instrument was a refusal: no shoes, no news, no formality, and villas built without felling trees. **Then they built the same idea twice more at different price points** — Evason in 1997, Six Senses in 2004 — sold both in 2012, and kept Soneva.

1 · THE QUESTION

Sonu's own account of the founding is a question he asked on arriving in the Maldives in the early 1990s: **why are luxury hotels so stiff?** People paid thousands to come to these islands and were then required to wear long trousers and closed shoes to dinner. **Why could they not eat with their toes in the sand?**

2 · THE ISLAND NOBODY WANTED

Kunfunadhoo had housed a resort that failed because it was too inaccessible. **They leased the liability and made inaccessibility the product** — which is the same move Zecha made at Pansea Beach seven years earlier, arrived at independently.

3 · 1995 — SONEVA FUSHI

At that moment the Maldivian market was European budget travel and diving. **Soneva Fushi was the first luxury hotel in the country**, and it created the category that the archipelago now lives on.

4 · WHAT BAREFOOT LUXURY ACTUALLY IS

Not informality for its own sake. **It is the removal of everything the guest does not value** — dress codes, marble, imported materials, visible service — and the reinvestment of that money in space, craft and place. Villas of unvarnished wood and bamboo, reclaimed telegraph poles, driftwood, no trees felled.

5 · NO NEWS, NO SHOES

Three words that are a service standard, a design brief and a marketing line at once. **The register notes how rare that is:** most house philosophies are one of the three pretending to be all three.

6 · THE BAREFOOT GUARDIAN

Each villa has one — a butler by another name, and the name is the point. **The vocabulary was rebuilt along with the dress code.**

7 · THE COPYISTS

Barefoot luxury spawned, in the trade's own phrase, countless copycats worldwide. **The Maldives went from three-star volume to one of the most expensive destinations on earth**, and every overwater villa in the archipelago descends from this decision.

8 · TWO BRANDS, THREE PRICES

Evason in 1997 and **Six Senses** after it took the philosophy down-market and out of the Maldives — Southeast Asia and Europe, fifteen resorts and forty-one spas by 2011. **Soneva stayed at the top.** They ran a segmented group without ever calling it that.

9 · 2012 — THE SALE

They sold Six Senses and Evason to **Pegasus Capital Advisors** and divested Soneva Gili, adopting a stated strategy of **one owner, one operator, one philosophy, one brand.** Six Senses is now part of IHG.

10 · WHY THEY SOLD THE BIGGER ONE

**This is the entry's structural decision.** Given the choice between the brand with scale and the brand with the philosophy intact, they kept the philosophy and sold the scale — the reverse of almost everyone else in this group.

11 · THE RESIDENCES

After the Maldivian law changed in December 2010, **Soneva Fushi became one of the first resorts in the country to sell leasehold residences to foreigners**; the first such sale was a four-bedroom villa in March 2011. The resort became a property business as well as a hotel.

12 · EVA'S HALF

Eva is Soneva's Creative Director and her Scandinavian design sense shaped the aesthetic; she had travelled to the Maldives before Sonu had heard of it. **The register names her in the entry title because the company is named after her too**, and because the visual language of barefoot luxury is hers.

13 · THE SUSTAINABILITY IS OPERATIONAL

Carbon neutral for direct and indirect emissions since 2012; 90% of waste reused or recycled; an Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth Centre and organic gardens at each resort, irrigated by grey water; water bottled on site in glass, and no plastic bottles. **These are operating facts rather than positioning**, which is what distinguishes the entry from the wave it inspired.

14 · BEYOND THE RESORTS

The **SLOWLIFE Symposium** from 2008; the **Soneva Dialogue** in 2016, a meeting of the chief executives of the world's largest fishing companies which led directly to **SeaBOS**; **Soneva Namoona** in 2019, a waste-management programme built with three island councils.

15 · 2024 — SONEVA SECRET

Fourteen villas in the remote Makunudhoo atoll, with no other island visible on the horizon. **Their grandest and smallest resort at once** — the logic of Amanpuri taken one step further, thirty-six years later.

16 · MAY 2025 — THEY LEAVE

**KSL Capital Partners took a majority of Soneva Group and the Shivdasanis stepped away fully.** They announced a new brand, Sosei, the same year.

17 · WHAT THEY CHANGED

They made subtraction the luxury and proved it on a national scale: an entire country's tourism economy was repositioned by one resort. **They also demonstrated that environmental practice could be the operating system of a luxury house rather than a claim attached to one**, twenty years before the industry adopted the language.

18 · WHAT THIS MODEL DOES NOT SOLVE

Barefoot luxury is trivially imitable at the surface — anyone can remove shoes and keep the marble — and the register's own Part X shows how quickly a philosophy becomes a decor. **It is also expensive to do honestly:** on-site bottling, waste centres and locally crafted villas cost more than the alternatives, which is why the imitators copy the appearance. ⚑ And the founders' final position is the standing risk of this group: the brand they kept because it held the philosophy is now majority-owned by private equity, and they are no longer in it.

19 · SHIVDASANI AND ZECHA

The two entries are the same argument reached independently seven years apart. **Zecha: forty rooms and no lobby, 1988. Shivdasani: no shoes and no dress code, 1995.** Both took an inaccessible site nobody wanted; both charged a multiple of the local rate; both were proved right by imitation. **Zecha subtracted the building; the Shivdasanis subtracted the etiquette.**

22 · LHL STORY — TOES IN THE SAND

You have flown eleven hours and taken a seaplane.

You are on an island in the Indian Ocean.

And at seven o'clock they ask you to put on long trousers and closed shoes.

He asked why.

Nobody had a good answer.

That question repositioned a country's entire tourism economy.

LHL-P-017 · Subtraction.

23 · A SECOND STORY — THEY SOLD THE BIG ONE

Two brands. One with fifteen resorts and forty-one spas.

One with a handful of islands.

They sold the big one.

One owner, one operator, one philosophy, one brand.

Almost everyone in this register would have sold the other.

24 · LEGACY

The Shivdasanis are in this register because they changed what a country is worth. Before Soneva Fushi the Maldives sold diving and package holidays; afterwards it sold the most expensive rooms on earth, and every resort there is working inside a category they defined by taking things away. **Their second contribution is less visible and may last longer:** they ran the environmental argument as operations — waste, water, carbon, materials — for two decades before it became compulsory language, and the numbers were audited rather than asserted.
