1 · WHY SHE BELONGS
Melita Hunter is the co-founder and creative author of Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia’s pioneering private-island resort. Her role went beyond ownership: contemporary industry sources credit her with the resort’s architecture and interior design.
2 · BEFORE HOTELS
Hunter has described her earlier career in the creative industries as an interior designer and stylist, working with organic and recycled materials across interiors, art installations, set design and events.
3 · CAMBODIA
Rory and Melita Hunter moved to Cambodia in 2005. In Phnom Penh they built a property business restoring and renovating colonial-era buildings before turning to hospitality.
4 · THE DISCOVERY
In 2006 the couple explored the Koh Rong archipelago by fishing boat. The journey exposed both the extraordinary natural setting and environmental pressures that would shape the Song Saa project.
5 · SONG SAA
Koh Ouen and Koh Bong were locally known together as Song Saa - “the sweethearts” in Khmer. The Hunters developed the pair as a private-island resort rather than imposing an unrelated international brand identity.
6 · DISTINCT ROLES
Song Saa is a joint Rory-and-Melita founding story. Rory is central to the business and sustainability platform; Melita’s unusually well-documented individual contribution is creative direction, interiors and material language.
7 · DESIGN FROM PLACE

8 · RECYCLED TIMBER
Villa floors incorporated recycled housing materials from Thailand and Cambodia, creating patina while reducing dependence on newly milled decorative timber.
9 · FISHING BOATS
Hunter bought old fishing boats rotting in estuaries and reused their weathered boards as panelling and art. The intervention simultaneously removed deteriorating painted material from waterways and created one of Song Saa’s visual signatures.
10 · DRIFTWOOD
Driftwood collected around neighbouring islands became columns, vanity bases, furniture, frames and sculpture. Material that conventional luxury might discard became part of the luxury proposition.
11 · FOUND OBJECTS
Old Cambodian beds were repurposed as work stations; local stone, vine, timber and thatch added a tactile vocabulary rooted in the Gulf of Thailand rather than a global resort catalogue.
12 · LANDSCAPE FIRST
Accounts of the planning process describe plans being adjusted around existing trees. Landscape preservation therefore affected the resort layout rather than appearing as a decorative afterthought.
13 · THE VILLAS
Song Saa opened with 27 overwater, beach and jungle villas. Hunter used a consistent material language while allowing each category to respond to water, vegetation and horizon.
14 · 2012
Song Saa Private Island opened in 2012 and became Cambodia’s first luxury private-island resort, establishing an early benchmark for high-end coastal tourism in the country.
15 · BAREFOOT LUXURY
The resort translated sustainability into a form of barefoot luxury: sophisticated but informal, tactile rather than glossy, and visually inseparable from water, jungle and reused material.
16 · SUSTAINABILITY MADE VISIBLE
At Song Saa, sustainability is not confined to technical systems. Reclaimed boat timber, driftwood, local stone and preserved vegetation allow guests to encounter the environmental proposition directly in the design.
17 · FOUNDATION

18 · RECOGNITION
In the 2014 Hospitality Design Awards, Song Saa won the Resort category and the Bathroom category. The awards record credits architecture and interior design to Melita Hunter and ownership to Melita and Rory Hunter.
19 · ACCIDENTAL HOTELIERS
The Hunters have described themselves as accidental hoteliers. Their outsider position helps explain why Song Saa combines hotel, design project, conservation platform and entrepreneurial experiment.
20 · SONG SAA COLLECTIVE
The Hunters later developed Song Saa Collective as an umbrella for hospitality and development initiatives, seeking to scale lessons first tested on the islands.
21 · SONG SAA RESERVE
The later Song Saa Reserve near Siem Reap extends the model inland across a 233-hectare project combining hospitality, residences and training with environmental and social initiatives.
22 · WHY AN INDIVIDUAL CARD
A joint Rory & Melita entry would be defensible, but it would hide Melita’s documented design authorship. LHL therefore gives her an individual card while explicitly retaining Rory as co-founder.
23 · WHAT SHE CHANGED
SHE HELPED PROVE THAT SUSTAINABILITY COULD BECOME A LUXURY DESIGN LANGUAGE RATHER THAN A TECHNICAL FOOTNOTE. RECLAIMED BOATS, DRIFTWOOD, OLD TIMBER, LOCAL STONE AND PRESERVED LANDSCAPE BECAME MATERIALS FROM WHICH DESIRE WAS BUILT.

The boats were bought, removed and dismantled; their scarred boards returned as panels and art. The story captures her method in miniature: conservation did not sit beside design - conservation supplied the design.
27 · STORY BANK - LUXURY MADE FROM WHAT WAS THERE
Instead of specifying a catalogue of new decorative objects, Hunter searched the place itself: old beds, driftwood, vine, stone, timber and the visual grammar of fishing villages. The resulting rooms feel specific because the composition could only have been made there.

Hunter’s place in luxury hospitality rests on the fusion of founder, designer and sustainability advocate. Song Saa matters because these choices became a coherent, award-winning luxury experience at a moment when Cambodia had almost no comparable island hospitality.
