As landlord
RCU holds AlUla and everything built on it. Six reserves were declared in 2019 covering 12,160 square kilometres, of which Sharaan National Park is 1,543; the hotels operate inside that framework rather than beside it.
As conservation authority
RCU took charge of Saudi Arabia’s national Arabian leopard breeding programme in 2019 and holds the Global Fund for the Arabian Leopard, now a separate entity. Sharaan reached the IUCN Green List in 2024 — an external audit of governance, and the reason the reserve has an entry of its own.
Candour
A state development commission is not a trust: its purpose is development, and conservation is a mandate it holds rather than a charitable object enforced by trustees. The Green List assesses the reserve’s governance and nothing wider. ⚡ Sharaan Resort is LHL-H-060 Sharaan by Jean Nouvel, admitted as pipeline before §22 existed and kept under §6.1. It is the only unopened house in the register, and its row says so.
