Paradise Group

Paradise Group's hospitality proposition is particularly visible at Paradise City near Incheon Airport: a destination where hotel accommodation belongs to a larger entertainment and cultural complex. SEGA SAMMY records the resort's opening in 2017 through Paradise SegaSammy. The joint venture is part of the project's identity, rather than a detail to erase from a simple owner-and-hotel story. 2 · ART ON THE ROUTE THROUGH

Paradise City's art map places Damien Hirst's Golden Legend in the hotel lobby and Yayoi Kusama's Great Gigantic Pumpkin in its WOW Zone. Peter Halley's Paradise Lost occupies the reception-desk area. The works are distributed through spaces guests use on arrival and while moving around the property. Art consequently shapes the approach to a room or a meeting, extending beyond a separate gallery visit. [2]

3 · BUILDINGS WITHOUT WINDOWS

MVRDV's contribution, The Imprint, was completed in 2018: two buildings housing a nightclub and an indoor theme park. Their programmes required windowless interiors. The architects answered with relief patterns taken from surrounding façades, reproduced in glass-fibre reinforced concrete panels. White surfaces emphasise those impressions; a conspicuous patch of gold marks part of the nightclub's entrance. [3]

4 · AN ENTRANCE AS PERFORMANCE

At the doorways, the façades appear to lift like curtains, exposing mirrored ceilings and media floors. The architectural treatment announces the entertainment inside before visitors enter. Together with the art collection, it gives Paradise City several kinds of spectacle at different scales: a sculpture in a lobby, a transformed threshold and a complex designed to register near an international airport. 5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ Paradise City is a specific joint-venture development, not the whole Paradise Group. The resort's 2017 opening and The Imprint's 2018 completion are distinct milestones. Architectural and art inventories establish the works discussed here; they do not establish the current programme or access arrangements of every venue. [1–3]
