1 · POSITION

NUO made Chinese cultural history the starting point for a contemporary luxury hotel brand. Announced at Beijing's Temple of Heaven in 2012, it opened its first property in 2015. Its operating story also crosses borders: Key International, the joint venture between Beijing Tourism Group and Kempinski, connects the brand's Chinese identity to an established international hotel partnership.[1]

2 · MING REFERENCES IN MODERN BEIJING

The first NUO Hotel Beijing drew on the Ming dynasty and incorporated works by contemporary artist Zeng Fanzhi. Historical references and newly commissioned art therefore occupied the same proposition. The intended experience was neither a restored imperial residence nor a standard international interior with a few local ornaments added at the end.[1]

3 · A RESORT BESIDE UNIVERSAL

In 2021, NUO Resort Hotel opened as part of Universal Beijing Resort. Kempinski's announcement described four hundred rooms and suites, a spa, an indoor pool and dining facilities beside the park's waterway. The design referenced Chinese royal gardens. A brand initially expressed through an urban hotel had acquired another setting, where the theme park supplied a major reason to stay.[2]

4 · TEA AND AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

The Universal resort's lobby lounge was dedicated to Chinese tea culture, while other restaurants offered Cantonese and broader international cooking. NUO Hotel Beijing subsequently announced participation in GHA DISCOVERY in January 2024. Cultural specificity and international distribution thus operated together: the brand could retain a Chinese vocabulary while connecting guests to a wider loyalty system.[2, 3]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ NUO's Chinese identity should not obscure the joint venture behind its operation. Claims to be the country's first homegrown luxury brand also require a definition and comparison that promotional material alone cannot settle. The demonstrable achievement is a particular combination of cultural references, contemporary art and hotel operation, developed across more than one type of site.[1–3]
