NIHI Hotels

NIHI's hospitality identity begins on Sumba, where Claude and Petra Graves arrived in search of a wave and created the retreat originally called Nihiwatu. The resort's history dates their encounter with the beach to 1988. Its subsequent development into NIHI places a small surfing origin behind a much broader proposition of villas, riding, excursions and extended stays. [1]

1 · POSITION

NIHI's hospitality identity begins on Sumba, where Claude and Petra Graves arrived in search of a wave and created the retreat originally called Nihiwatu. The resort's history dates their encounter with the beach to 1988. Its subsequent development into NIHI places a small surfing origin behind a much broader proposition of villas, riding, excursions and extended stays. [1]

2 · A SECOND PARTNERSHIP

In 2012, Chris Burch learned that the resort was seeking help to expand. He involved hotelier James McBride, then at YTL Hotels, and visited Sumba with his sons. NIHI's own account dates Burch's acquisition in partnership with McBride to that year. The investment enlarged an existing undertaking; the Graves' contribution belongs at the beginning of the story. [1]

3 · BEYOND THE SURF BREAK

The current Sumba offer includes horse riding on the beach, trekking, visits connected with ikat weaving and a spa programme at Nihioka. Accommodation ranges from villas for couples to larger settings for families and groups, including Raja Mandaka. The variety matters because it gives travelling companions different ways to inhabit the same destination. Surfing supplies a powerful origin, but a stay can now revolve around land, horses or the domestic privacy of a villa. [2]

4 · A FOUNDATION BEFORE THE ACQUISITION

The Sumba Foundation traces its establishment to Claude Graves and Sean Downs in 2001, following their meeting at Nihiwatu. Its first water project began that year at Gallowatu Village. This supplies a specific institutional history for the resort's community connection, preceding the later ownership change by more than a decade. [3]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ NIHI Hotels is the collection heading; Sumba is the documented origin examined here. The foundation should not be retrospectively credited to the 2012 purchasers. Its account establishes projects and founders, rather than independently measuring the social impact of a guest's holiday. [1–3]
