1 · POSITION
Meybod, in Yazd province, is a desert city of pre-Islamic origin whose historic core is on Iran’s tentative list for World Heritage. The register holds it because one place keeps the whole apparatus of the desert road: a Safavid caravanserai, a chaparkhaneh — the post house — an ice house and a dovecote tower. [1]
2 · THE ROAD’S BUILDINGS
The Safavid caravanserai, the Karvansaraye Abbasi, lodged the traveller; the chaparkhaneh beside it was the station of the royal post; the ice house kept winter’s ice into summer; the dovecote gathered manure for the fields. [1]
3 · THE CASTLE
Above the town stands Narin Castle, one of the oldest castles in Iran, dated to the Achaemenid and Sasanian periods, its upper floors rebuilt in the Islamic era. [1]
4 · IN THE REGISTER
The register files the Persian caravanserai as a type under its own code; Meybod is entered as the village where the type sits among the other buildings of the road. [1]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
⚑ The source read lists the caravanserai, post house, ice house and dovecote without describing them; their functions are described here from the types they belong to, not from the buildings themselves. Only one source was read. [1]
