1 · POSITION
Deir-e Gachin stands about eighty kilometres northeast of Qom, on the old road from Ray to Qom and the Silk Roads, inside what is now the Kavir National Park. It is called the mother of Iranian caravanserais. Its 12,000 square metres make it one of the largest on the inscribed list of 2023. [1]
2 · A BUILDING OF MANY CENTURIES
Some accounts trace its origins to the Sasanian era, and some to Ardashir I himself. It was restored under the Seljuks, the Safavids and the Qajars, and Seljuk builders reused Sasanian bricks in their repairs, so that one wall can hold several dynasties. [1]
3 · THE FORM
The complex is laid out loosely in the shape of a great chahar-taq, the four-arched pavilion of Persian architecture, round a courtyard in the manner of the type: shelter, water and stabling inside a single defended wall in open desert. [1, 2]
4 · ON THE WORLD HERITAGE LIST
It is one of the fifty-four caravanserais inscribed together in 2023 as The Persian Caravanserai, the selection made from more than a thousand that survive in Iran. [1, 2]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
⚑ The Sasanian origin is reported as something some sources suggest, not as an established date. Whether the caravanserai receives overnight guests today is not stated by the sources read; the entry records it as a monument. [1–2]
