The register admitted department stores. Markets are the older form of the same act — a building put up so that trade would have somewhere to happen, and a public given somewhere to spend the afternoon.
The test is authorship, not age. Every city has a market; most of them grew. This group takes only those that were commissioned, built or deliberately reinvented by someone who can be named. The Grand Bazaar was ordered by Mehmet II in 1455 to raise money for the Hagia Sophia. Chandni Chowk was laid out in 1650 to a design by Jahanara Begum, Shah Jahan’s daughter. La Boqueria is here for Falguera’s 1913 arches rather than its 1217 stalls.
And one belongs for a modern act: the Mercado de San Miguel, whose 2009 reopening turned a grocery hall into a room people go to in order to eat and drink — the model since copied in Lisbon, Florence, Rotterdam and London.
