Mourad Mazouz opened Sketch in London in 2002 with Pierre Gagnaire. Its significance lay in treating a restaurant address as several different experiences: food, art, design and sociability could occupy the same building without being reduced to one dining-room formula. Gagnaire’s own chronology confirms the collaboration and the year. [1, 2]

2 · BEFORE SKETCH

Mazouz’s Wallpaper* interview places the project after Au Bascou in Paris and Momo in London, which opened in 1997. Sketch emerged from a restaurateur already working with atmosphere and cultural identity. It was also a demanding physical conversion: the interview describes years spent resolving structural problems in the Georgian building. [1]

3 · A COMMISSIONING AUTHOR

The restaurateur’s contribution was to assemble a setting in which different creative practices could coexist. That is a form of authorship, but it is collaborative by definition. The food required a chef, the rooms required designers and artists, and the experience depended on staff making those elements function for guests.

4 · DIFFERENT ROOMS, DIFFERENT JUDGEMENTS

The Lecture Room and Library received a third Michelin star in 2019, according to the interview’s account. That recognition concerned a specific restaurant within Sketch. It should not be used as a blanket rating for every room, bar or changing artistic installation in the building. [1]

Sketch’s collaborative character is essential: Mazouz is credited with the restaurant project and its commissioning vision, while Gagnaire retains his distinct culinary authorship.
