1 · POSITION
Baghdad-born, London-based, the first woman to take the Pritzker. Morpheus at City of Dreams in Macau — LHL-H-525 Morpheus Macau — is the hotel in the Library that carries her authorship most completely: a free-form exoskeleton carrying the building’s load, with the voids cut through it, on foundations left abandoned from an earlier scheme. She died in 2016, two years before it opened.
2 · WHY SHE IS IN THE LIBRARY
Because the building is the room rate. Morpheus is the clearest instance in the register of structure sold as the product — a guest is not paying for a view or a service tradition but for the shape of the thing they are inside. Every hotel since that has been designed as an object rather than a container is arguing with this one.
3 · WHAT THIS MODEL DOES NOT SOLVE
A building whose structure is its selling point is expensive to build, hard to alter and impossible to age gracefully out of fashion. It also puts the architect above the operator in the guest’s mind, which is a problem for the operator on the day the design dates.
