1 · WHY HE MATTERS

Ayhan Şahenk belongs in the Luxury Hospitality Library as the institutional founder behind the later Doğuş hospitality ecosystem. His own historical importance is different from that of Ferit F. Şahenk. Ayhan did not create the modern portfolio of D Maris Bay, Chenot Palace, Peninsula partnerships and d.ream; he created the diversified business institution from which that second-generation hospitality strategy became possible. For LHL, he is therefore a Founders & Pioneers / Owners & Builders figure rather than the direct author of today's luxury hotel portfolio.

2 · FOUNDING DOĞUŞ GROUP - 1951

Doğuş Group traces its foundation to Ayhan Şahenk in 1951. The enterprise grew across multiple sectors and developed into one of Türkiye's major diversified business groups. This institutional scale is essential to the later hospitality story: luxury hotel investment requires long-term capital, development capability and the ability to participate in complex destination projects.

3 · A DIVERSIFIED BUSINESS FOUNDATION

Ayhan Şahenk's significance lies in building a diversified corporate platform rather than a pure hotel company. That distinction later gave Doğuş unusual flexibility in hospitality. The group could connect hotels with construction, real estate, finance, infrastructure and other business capabilities rather than treating accommodation as an isolated activity. The modern Doğuş hospitality ecosystem should therefore be read as an extension of a much older institutional architecture.

4 · EARLY TOURISM ACTIVITY

Doğuş's corporate history places tourism among the sectors that developed within the group's diversification before the modern luxury-hospitality era. These earlier tourism activities created an institutional bridge between the founder's diversified enterprise and the much more visible hotel, restaurant, marina and lifestyle investments of the next generation. The sources available for this card support the existence of that earlier tourism direction more clearly than they support attributing individual modern hotel concepts directly to Ayhan Şahenk.

5 · FOUNDER VS. MODERN HOSPITALITY AUTHOR

LHL should keep authorship precise. Ayhan Şahenk founded Doğuş Group and created the institutional base. Ferit F. Şahenk later became the central individual associated with the group's contemporary luxury hospitality and lifestyle expansion. This separation prevents the common historical error of crediting a founder with hotels, brands or strategies developed after his era.

6 · THE SECOND GENERATION

Ferit F. Şahenk succeeded into a group already possessing scale, capital and diversified capabilities. Under the second generation, hospitality became much more visible through D-Hotels & Resorts, D Maris Bay, restaurant investments, marinas, specialist wellness and partnerships with international luxury hotel brands. The transition illustrates a classic hospitality-investment pattern: the first generation creates the institution; the second generation reallocates part of that institutional strength toward luxury experiences and global partnerships.

7 · FROM CORPORATE GROUP TO HOSPITALITY ECOSYSTEM

The modern Doğuş hospitality platform includes proprietary hotels, independently branded owned-and-managed assets, international hotel investments, restaurants, marinas and mixed-use destinations. Those activities belong primarily to the later period, but their ability to coexist under one ownership ecosystem depends on the diversified group created by Ayhan Şahenk. His LHL role is therefore foundational rather than operational.

8 · D-HOTELS & RESORTS - A LATER DEVELOPMENT

D-Hotels & Resorts should not be presented as Ayhan Şahenk's personal hotel chain. It is a later hospitality operating platform within Doğuş and receives its own LHL Luxury Resorts card. The historical link is institutional: D-Hotels exists inside the group Ayhan founded, while its modern portfolio and strategy belong to subsequent leadership.

9 · D MARIS BAY AND THE LIMITS OF ATTRIBUTION

D Maris Bay is one of Doğuş's defining contemporary proprietary luxury resorts, but its modern identity should not be retroactively attributed to Ayhan Şahenk. The property belongs in the later hospitality narrative associated with the modern Doğuş platform. This distinction is important for LHL's methodology: ownership genealogy and creative authorship are related, but they are not identical.

10 · CHENOT, PENINSULA AND GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS

The same principle applies to later relationships with Chenot, The Peninsula, Hyatt, Maçakızı and other hospitality names. They demonstrate the strength and flexibility of the institution founded by Ayhan Şahenk, but they belong historically to a later strategic era. His card should therefore explain the foundation without duplicating Ferit Şahenk's hospitality biography.

11 · WHY A SEPARATE CARD IS JUSTIFIED

Ayhan Şahenk could have been reduced to a paragraph in the Doğuş investor card, but a separate People entry is justified because founder institutions matter to hospitality history. Many luxury hotel portfolios are created not by lifelong hoteliers but by diversified owners whose capital, development culture and succession structures later shape hospitality assets. Ayhan Şahenk represents that owner-builder genealogy clearly.

12 · TURKISH HOSPITALITY CONTEXT

Türkiye's modern luxury hospitality sector has been shaped by several kinds of founders: hotel specialists, tour operators, construction groups and diversified conglomerates. Doğuş represents the diversified-conglomerate route. This contrasts usefully with Mehmet Nuri Ersoy's tourism-distribution route, Fikret Öztürk's golf-to-resort route and other founder stories already represented in LHL.

13 · INSTITUTIONAL LEGACY

A founder's hospitality legacy can be indirect but still consequential. Doğuş's later ability to own a proprietary resort, manage an independent destination hotel, invest alongside global luxury operators and participate in marinas and restaurants reflects institutional breadth accumulated over decades. That breadth is the central legacy relevant to this card.

14 · WHAT THIS MODEL DOES NOT SOLVE

A diversified corporate foundation does not itself create luxury hospitality expertise. The later success of D-Hotels and Doğuş's hospitality partnerships required new people, operating capabilities and specialist partners. It would therefore be misleading to describe the modern hospitality ecosystem as the automatic execution of Ayhan Şahenk's original 1951 vision. The more accurate interpretation is succession: a strong institution created options that later leadership used in new ways.

15 · LHL ASSESSMENT

Ayhan Şahenk merits a concise but separate LHL People card. He should rank below Ferit F. Şahenk in direct hospitality relevance, because Ferit is the stronger author of the modern luxury portfolio. But Ayhan remains historically important as the first-generation founder whose enterprise made that portfolio institutionally possible.

16 · TIMELINE

1929 - Ayhan Şahenk is born. 1951 - He founds the enterprise that becomes Doğuş Group. Second half of the 20th century - Doğuş expands across multiple sectors and develops into a major diversified Turkish business group. Later 20th century - Tourism becomes part of the group's wider sector diversification. 2001 - Ayhan Şahenk dies; the second generation continues the group. 2000s-2020s - Under later leadership, Doğuş develops a much more extensive luxury hospitality, restaurant, marina and lifestyle ecosystem. 2026 - Ayhan Şahenk's LHL significance remains that of institutional founder rather than direct operator of the current hotel portfolio.

17 · CONCLUSION

Ayhan Şahenk's place in luxury hospitality history is indirect but foundational. He created Doğuş Group in 1951 and built the diversified institution that the next generation could later transform into a major hospitality and lifestyle investor. The distinction between generations is the key to telling the story correctly: Ayhan built the platform; Ferit built much of the modern hospitality ecosystem upon it. For LHL, that makes Ayhan Şahenk a concise but meaningful Founders & Pioneers / Owners & Builders entry and completes the generational architecture of the Doğuş mini-chapter.
