The argument
In South Africa the room pays for the land. That is the country's invention, and it is also the country's unfinished question, because **a register that files the lodge has to say whose land it was.**
Everywhere else in this series the house sells a building, an image, a rule or an absence. Here the guest buys a night whose price funds a reserve — and every one of those reserves was made by taking ground out of one use and putting it into another. Sometimes that meant ending the hunting. Sometimes it meant ending the farming. Sometimes it meant removing the people who lived there. **All three are the same act seen from different sides**, and the luxury is built on all three.
South Africa is not one invention but three sharing a passport: **the steamship grand, the photographic lodge, and the wine estate that sells a night.** File two and omit the third and the country reads as a safari brochure with a pink hotel attached.
1 · The garden before the verandah
LHL-S-726 Company's Garden is the first hospitality infrastructure at the Cape: a Dutch East India Company vegetable plot of 1652, planted to victual ships bound for Batavia. Water, greens, a night for the crew. The Slave Lodge stands on the same axis, and the register names it rather than writing a garden romance.
The grand arrives with a shipping line, not with tourism. Sir Donald Currie of Union-Castle — LHL-P-791 — bought the old van Oudtshoorn garden in 1890 because his first-class passengers had nowhere ashore that matched the ship, and LHL-H-134 Mount Nelson opened on 6 March 1899 with hot and cold running water. Within months it was a war headquarters. Pink from 1918.
The order matters: the mail steamer built the hotel. The hotel did not attract the steamer.
2 · The room that pays for the reserve
This is the export. Not a style — a business model, and one this register can date.
LHL-S-718 Kruger National Park: the Sabie reserve proclaimed **26 March 1898, merged under the National Parks Act of 1926. LHL-P-789 James Stevenson-Hamilton*, warden from 1902, earned the name Skukuza* — "he who sweeps clean" — and the register's row says what it was earned for: **he removed the communities living on that ground as well as the poachers.**
LHL-H-044 Londolozi begins as Sparta, a bankrupt cattle farm bought in 1926 and hunted over. In 1971 the next generation puts the rifle down, takes the Zulu word londolozi, "protector of all living things", and proves that photographs pay better than trophies. Relais & Châteaux in 1993. LHL-P-024 Dave Varty is held.
⚑ And the case the register most needs and does not hold: MalaMala, in existence since 1927, the first private reserve here to ban hunting — and the reserve whose land was restored in 2015 to the Nwandlamhlarhi Community, who had been removed from it under apartheid. **The invention and the dispossession are the same property**, which is exactly why it cannot be filed as scenery. It is nominated to the Hotel Collection House.
3 · The estate that sells a night
The third type is older than the lodge and quieter. Cape Dutch werf farms that discovered they could sell supper and a bed: LHL-H-493 Babylonstoren — and LHL-P-792 Karen Roos, who rebuilt a 1690 farm around its garden so that the vegetable beds are the reason for the room rather than its decoration — LHL-H-494 Delaire Graff, LHL-H-492 Leeu Estates.
The conclusion: the wine estate is the only South African type where the product existed before the guest. The farm was already working. The room was added to it — the reverse of the lodge, where the reserve exists because the room pays for it.
4 · What the register holds, and what that shape says
Eight houses, eleven brands, six people, and — after this chapter — five satellites: LHL-S-726 the Company's Garden, LHL-S-727 Table Mountain, LHL-S-728 the V&A Waterfront and Silo District, LHL-S-718 Kruger, and the Tswalu Foundation.
⚑ Nineteen of the country's entries have no city, and that is not a data problem but a portrait of the industry: Singita, &Beyond and MORE live everywhere and therefore nowhere. **A share register with eight buildings attached is not a geography.** Until at least one house per brand is pinned to a reserve or a street, the map of this country is a map of holding companies.

6 · Candour
**Two of the three briefs this chapter was built from say Sol Kerzner is missing from the register entirely. He is LHL-P-003** — the third person this register ever admitted. What is missing is a South African house of his. The briefs read the geography page and report its silences as the register's.
Sun City is contested and is nominated anyway. It was built in a nominally independent homeland because the gambling and the revues were illegal in South Africa, and that is the fact, stated once, without hagiography and without the pretence that a register can decline to notice the largest resort the continent had seen.
No land claim is summarised here that this chapter cannot date. The MalaMala restitution of 2015 is named because it is dated and public. Other removals behind other reserves are not, and the register will not average them into a sentence.
