The three belong together. Souq al-Madina was the largest covered market in the world and the origin claim for buying everything under one roof; Souq Al-Hamidiyah runs six hundred metres of Damascus along a Roman road. The Baron exists because of them: around 1870 a member of the Armenian Mazloumian family, passing through Aleppo on pilgrimage, saw how uncomfortable European travellers were in the khans of the souq, and resolved to build something else. Syria is therefore where this register can watch the caravanserai hand over to the hotel, in one city, within sight of the market it replaced.

Abdel Hamid Pasha builds the Al-Hamidiyah souq along the Roman decumanus.

A Mazloumian passing through Aleppo finds European travellers ill at ease in the khans of the souq, and resolves to build a modern hotel.
1884
Fire destroys much of Al-Hamidiyah; the rebuilding adds the iron vault that still roofs it.

Onnig and Armenak Mazloumian build the Baron in the gardens outside old Aleppo, timed to the opening of Aleppo station on the Berlin–Baghdad railway.

French bombardment damages the Damascus souq during the Great Syrian Revolt.

Agatha Christie writes part of Murder on the Orient Express at the Baron; the novel opens in Aleppo.
