Qatari Diar

1 · POSITION

Qatari Diar can build a city or change the use of a single famous address. Established by the Qatar Investment Authority in 2005, the property company launched its flagship Lusail project that December. In London, its conversion of the former United States Embassy into The Chancery Rosewood demonstrates the same capital working at a very different scale.[1, 2]

2 · A CITY BEFORE ITS HOTELS

Lusail places hospitality within the larger undertaking of urban development. Streets, residential districts and commercial space precede the experience sold by an individual hotel. Qatari Diar's role is consequently broader than assembling a collection of hospitality brands: it helps determine the setting in which those brands can operate. Its own corporate history identifies Lusail as the starting point of that ambition.[1]

3 · THE EMBASSY CHANGES GUESTS

The Chancery Rosewood began welcoming guests on 1 September 2025. The former embassy on Grosvenor Square retained its identity as an architectural landmark while acquiring 144 suites, restaurants and an Asaya spa. David Chipperfield Architects led the architectural transformation; Joseph Dirand designed the interiors. Diplomatic premises became a place where a room, dinner or treatment could be booked.[2, 3]

4 · SEVERAL AUTHORS, ONE ADDRESS

The project separates responsibilities unusually clearly. Qatari Diar supplied the development platform; architects reworked the building; Rosewood supplied the hotel identity and hospitality operation. Reading those roles together explains more than attributing the entire result to the name above the entrance. The investor's contribution is visible in the decision to undertake the conversion, even when guests chiefly encounter Rosewood.[2, 3]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ Opening and inauguration were different events: Rosewood announced guests arriving in September, while Qatari Diar reported its formal celebration in October 2025. Neither date should be silently substituted for the other. The project also demonstrates an adaptive reuse strategy, not proof that every Qatari Diar development follows that model.[2, 3]
