1 · POSITION

Mantis was founded by Adrian Gardiner in 2000, with a hospitality identity rooted in conservation. Accor traces the background to Gardiner's work restoring degraded farmland in South Africa's Eastern Cape during the 1990s. The sequence matters: landscape rehabilitation preceded the collection, providing an origin around which a wider accommodation business could develop. [1, 2]

2 · A COLLECTION IN SEVERAL FORMS

The present portfolio encompasses lodges, other nature-focused retreats and waterway accommodation. Accor's examples include Founders Lodge in South Africa, Chobe Princess in Namibia and Feline Fields in Botswana. These names identify different physical settings within the collection. A lodge and a vessel organise encounters with landscape differently, even when both are presented through the same language of nature and conservation. [2]

3 · ACCOR ARRIVES

In April 2018, AccorHotels announced an agreement to acquire a 50 per cent stake in Mantis. The transaction connected a specialist collection with a much larger hospitality organisation. The announcement also introduced the Community Conservation Fund Africa, or CCFA, as a joint initiative. The corporate relationship thus included both commercial expansion and a named vehicle for conservation-related work. [3]

4 · WHAT THE PROPOSITION ASKS OF A STAY

Accor's current account separates conservation, animal welfare and communities as elements of the brand. This is a useful distinction: restoring habitat, treating animals responsibly and supporting neighbouring people are different activities, each requiring its own evidence. Mantis offers an example of hospitality organised around that set of commitments. Its historical interest lies in the attempt to carry a land-restoration story into a collection that now includes several countries and forms of accommodation. [1, 2]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ The 50 per cent figure describes the announced 2018 transaction, not a newly verified ownership percentage. Conservation language states the brand's intentions; it is not an independent assessment of every property. Gardiner's earlier restoration work and Mantis's 2000 founding should remain separate dates. [1–3]
