Parkview Green FangCaoDi, Beijing

Parkview Green FangCaoDi is a mixed-use complex in Beijing’s Chaoyang district, completed in 2012: a shopping centre, offices, an arts hub and a hotel, about 200,000 square metres in all, sealed inside a single glass pyramid. It enters the register for the hotel at its apex and for an art collection that turns a mall into a place to be visited rather than passed through. [1, 2]

1 · POSITION

Parkview Green FangCaoDi is a mixed-use complex in Beijing’s Chaoyang district, completed in 2012: a shopping centre, offices, an arts hub and a hotel, about 200,000 square metres in all, sealed inside a single glass pyramid. It enters the register for the hotel at its apex and for an art collection that turns a mall into a place to be visited rather than passed through. [1, 2]

2 · A BUILDING WITH ITS OWN CLIMATE

Two nine-level and two eighteen-level towers stand inside the pyramid, whose envelope makes an energy-efficient microclimate; Arup engineered it. The skin is an ETFE film that insulates the interior from the city outside. Parkview, a Taiwanese family group with its headquarters in Hong Kong, built it; its chairman George Wong invested 2.8 billion yuan, and the opening came after construction delays and an overrun of budget. [1, 2, 3]

3 · THE HOTEL AT THE TOP

Hotel Éclat Beijing sits at the apex of the pyramid: 100 rooms over five floors, many with a private terrace and some with their own pool, opened in March 2013 according to a design memo written that May. It belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Its glass structure and large windows give a bright, climate-controlled interior that looks out over the complex beneath. [1, 4]

4 · THE COLLECTION

Some 500 works are placed through the complex, among them pieces by Salvador Dalí and Yue Minjun; the hotel holds what the design memo calls China’s largest private collection of Dalí, beside Andy Warhol, Zeng Fanzhi and Chen Wenling. Sculpture stands at the entrance. The owner’s own phrase is that art and the environment are in Parkview’s DNA, and the building is arranged to make that visible. [1, 3, 4]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ In December 2024 the complex was reported to be on the market, with a state-owned buyer interested and nothing decided; whether it has since been sold is not established. The claim about the size of the Dalí collection is the memo’s, not an inventory. The hotel’s opening date rests on a single trade memo, and the operator of the hotel today is not confirmed beyond its membership listing. [1–4]
