Cape Wickham Golf Links opened for public play in 2015 on King Island, Tasmania. The course is routed through coastal land around Cape Wickham Lighthouse and credits Mike DeVries and Darius Oliver as its designers. It made the island’s northern landscape the substance of a golfing journey, giving visitors a reason to travel specifically for the course. [1, 2]
2 · A COASTLINE IN PLAY
The closing holes show how the setting enters the game. The seventeenth occupies a cove-side position, while the eighteenth curves around Victoria Cove. Australian Golf Digest’s account explains that playing nearer the right edge of the final fairway can improve the approach angle; the beach itself forms part of the course. [3] The view is therefore inseparable from a decision about where to hit the ball and how much risk to accept.
3 · TWO NAMES ON THE DESIGN
The course’s own architects page presents DeVries and Oliver together. It describes DeVries as a designer who also shapes features on the ground and identifies Oliver’s background in the study and publication of golf architecture. [2] Those different forms of experience are relevant to the finished course. The official joint credit is the sound basis for identifying its authors without assigning every hole to one hand.
4 · THE DESTINATION’S MEASURE
Cape Wickham concentrates its appeal in the round itself. The coastal routing and sequence of holes offer the visitor an extended encounter with a particular place. In that sense, the course functions as a destination’s principal attraction: the journey becomes worthwhile through what can be played there. This is a reading of its design, rather than a claim based on a league-table position. [1, 3]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
⚑ The division of authorship is contested. In a 2021 first-person account, Oliver challenged descriptions of Cape Wickham as DeVries’s sole design and set out his own contribution. That testimony is evidence of the dispute, not an independent adjudication. This entry retains both names, as the course itself does, and makes no numerical allocation of design credit. [2, 4]
