1 · POSITION
Qal’at Murair is the fortified settlement inland of Al Zubarah, built to protect the town’s wells. The register holds it for what it says about the first condition of hospitality in a desert: not comfort but water, and here the water was defended with walls. [1]
2 · PART OF A SYSTEM
Murair belonged to a system of fortifications that controlled the wells and grazing grounds of Al Zubarah’s hinterland. The pearling town on the shore depended on it: the sea paid for the town, but the town drank from the land behind it. [1]
3 · A LONG OCCUPATION
The settlement stayed occupied until the Al Zubarah fort was built in 1938, outlasting the town it served, which was burned in 1811 and abandoned by the early twentieth century. [1]
4 · ON THE WORLD HERITAGE LIST
It is part of the Al Zubarah archaeological site inscribed by UNESCO on 22 June 2013, sixty hectares that keep the town, its harbour and the defences of its water together. [1, 2]
