Mavis Khoo-Oei began her career at Goodwood Park Hotel in 1965 and became its general manager in 1978. The hotel’s anniversary history records both dates. Her relationship with the Singapore property therefore includes years of hotel management before the chairmanship through which she is usually identified. [1]
2 · KEEPING THE HOTEL
In a 2015 Forbes profile, Khoo-Oei described her wish to preserve Goodwood’s legacy while continuing to invest in its upkeep. Chairman since 2004, she approved the major decisions. The report documented a phased refurbishment between 2004 and 2008 and the family’s stated intention to retain the property rather than pursue its redevelopment potential. Her contribution lay in making an inherited hotel remain a hotel, with capital committed to its continued use. [2]
3 · AN OLDER BUILDING
Goodwood’s history reaches well beyond the Khoo family. Its clubhouse opened in 1900; the Manasseh brothers converted the property into a hotel in 1929; Khoo Teck Puat acquired it in 1968. Singapore’s National Heritage Board identifies the Tower Block as the national monument. That precise boundary matters: the historic building and the wider hotel estate are not interchangeable. Khoo-Oei’s work belongs to the later stewardship of a place made by several generations. [3]
4 · BACKING A CHEF
Her hospitality interests also included support for Jason Atherton. In a March 2012 interview, the chef credited her with helping his business decisions and career. The accompanying company breakdown recorded her 25 per cent holding in Pottage Restaurants, the company behind Pollen Street Social, which had opened in London in April 2011. This is a distinct contribution: investing in a chef’s independent restaurant and acting as a business mentor. Atherton’s food and restaurant concept remain his own. [4]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
The evidence is strongest for sustained management, investment and patronage. It does not establish Khoo-Oei as the inventor of Goodwood’s individual dishes or dining traditions. Her stated commitment to retention in 2015 is also a dated position, not a permanent guarantee about the estate’s future. The hotel’s current heritage page continues to identify her as chairman and associates her tenure with renovation and expansion. [2, 5]
