1 · POSITION
Born Hubert Dessange in 1925 at Souesmes in the Sologne, son of a hairdresser and of a mother who ran the café next door. He learned in his father's salon and went to Paris in 1945 to dress the hair of the city's women. He was dismissed twelve times in a year before Louis Gervais took him on. He opened his first salon in 1954, married Brigitte Bardot's agent in 1956 and gained Bardot as a client, and became official hairdresser to the Cannes Film Festival in 1961.
2 · WHAT HE INVENTED
The *coiffé-décoiffé* — hair deliberately undone — worn by Bardot, Françoise Hardy, Jeanne Moreau, France Gall and Sylvie Vartan. And, through his house in 1983, balayage: hand-painted lightening that is now standard practice in every salon in the world and is almost never credited to anyone.
3 · ⚑ THE DECISION THAT SEPARATES HIM
In 1966 he put his own name on ten salons he did not personally work in. Every other figure in this group built a practice that ended with them — Alexandre's was sold, Carita became a label. Dessange decided early that the name should outlive the hands, and it has: the house runs several hundred salons across dozens of countries and he lived to see it. Whether that is the same trade is the question the Library leaves open.
4 · WHAT THIS MODEL DOES NOT SOLVE
A franchised name sells consistency rather than authorship, and the twelve dismissals are the point: what made him worth hiring was precisely what cannot be franchised. Frédéric Fekkai apprenticed here at twenty-one, opened Dessange's American salon, then left to found his own house — which is what talent does inside a franchise.
