THE ACT
Adrian Zecha hired Anthony Lark out of the Regent Sydney at twenty-seven and sent him to Phuket to open a resort for which no category yet existed. Amanpuri opened in 1988. Lark describes himself as the first employee of Aman Resorts, and he ran the house for twelve years, opening Amandari, Amanusa, Amankila and the Strand in Rangoon along the way.
In 2000 he left. Four years later Trisara opened nine kilometres up the same coast: thirty-nine villas, every one with its own pool, the first all-pool-villa resort in South East Asia. He co-designed it, handled the sale of thirty villas to private owners, and ran it until 2020.
WHY IT MATTERS
A case study of Amanpuri prepared for the NIDA business school names the house’s two leading competitors as Trisara and Anantara Layan, and observes that both are run by former Amanpuri general managers working from concepts learned there.
That is the argument for this entry, and it is unusual. Part IX admits people who authored a model others reproduced. Lark did not copy Aman’s model from outside; he was inside it, and the reproduction happened on the same island within sight of the original. A house that trains people well enough will eventually compete with them.
His own account of what he took is narrower than the buildings suggest. Speaking in 2003 he said privacy was the luxury — not toilets that blew smoke, not automatic things, not gold-plated taps, not pretentious things. Trisara is low-density where Amanpuri is intricate, and every villa opens onto a pool nobody overlooks.
CANDOUR
Trisara is often described as the cheaper Aman. Nothing found compares the two on rate, and the sources describe a different argument entirely — density and privacy, not price. The register carries what the sources support and flags the rest.
He was one of three partners owning and operating Trisara, not its sole author; the Montara Hospitality Group and the Pattamasaevi family are the owners.
He left Trisara in 2020 and is now an executive director at Bensley Collection. The entry rests on two decades of work, not on a current position.
